Yesterday’s Richmond Times-Dispatch has a piece written by Jeff E. Schapiro declaring that Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli is the defacto leader of the Republican Party of Virginia, NOT Governor Bob McDonnell. I tend to agree with this position as Ken has been leading the charge on issues like Obamacare, Cap & Trade, illegal immigration and other key issues facing the Commonwealth. McDonnell is subtle. Cuccinelli is anything but. McDonnell, in his rhetoric, proposes the possible. Cuccinelli propounds principle. McDonnell is the accommodating ponderer. Cuccinelli acts with all deliberate speed. Does McDonnell look weak; Cuccinelli, strong? From the start, McDonnell appears to have allowed Cuccinelli to set the tempo. Cuccinelli is an unapologetic conservative leader who fearlessly executes policy based on principle regardless of the political consequences. He did so as a Delegate to the General Assembly. He did so as a State Senator and he’s doing so as AG. This has …

Bob McDonnell - Taxing Business to give State Workers Bonus
During his campaign for governor last year, candidate Bob McDonnell promised to make Virginia a state that fostered business development and set up an environment to make it easier for businesses to thrive, and create private sector jobs. A large part of his promises included reducing taxes and red tape on businesses.
“Bob’s for Jobs“, who can forget that slogan.
At this point, we all can. It was simply not true. Words spoken to get elected.
The Richmond Times Dispatch reported:
Gov. Bob McDonnell said yesterday that he’s optimistic the state will end this fiscal year on June 30 with a surplus that’s significant enough to trigger a bonus for state employees.
That came despite a May revenue report in which tax collections declined. General fund revenue collections fell 0.2 percent in May compared with May 2009, but state officials said the figures beat their projected figure.
“We’re certainly tracking the right way,” McDonnell said after a bill-signing ceremony at St. John’s Church in Richmond. “We’ve had three months in a row that have been encouraging.
“This one’s just slightly negative but still a couple points ahead of forecast. If we just are flat for June, we should have a $130 to $140 million surplus.”
But there is just one detail they are leaving out. The budget surplus is not due to any economic rebound. It is due to an accounting gimmick that will cost businesses millions of dollars in interest expenses as they are forced to pay Sales Taxes for June, 2010 in June!
Businesses are being forced to borrow money to pay state sales taxes before the merchandise is even sold! Governor McDonnell is forcing businesses struggling to keep their doors open to pay these taxes in order to collect 13 months of sales tax revenue in the 2010 fiscal year.
So, there will be no surplus without snatching money that should be a part of the 2011 fiscal year. And rather than correct the problem by having only 11 months of tax revenue in 2011, Bob McDonnell has magnanimously decided to extend the tax grab every year until he is out of office, leaving the 11 month fiscal year for the next governor.
So, while the General Assembly has tried to outlaw Payday Loans, Bob McDonnell has now forced businesses to borrow money to give the state a Payday Loan. And he will give this money out to state workers in the form of bonuses.
Under President Obama, the Federal Payroll has swelled to epic proportions. It looks like Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell is using the Obama playbook.
Any surplus should be returned to the businesses who had to borrow money to pay for McDonnell’s accounting scam in the form of tax credits for interest paid. Not given away to state workers, who are lucky to have jobs. And this accounting scam should be stopped in fiscal year 2011. McDonnell should be required to deal with his own mess, and not pass the buck to the next governor.
If the “surplus” is given away to state workers as a bonus, at the expense of businesses already in trouble, this is simply a broken promise by Bob McDonnell.
Shortly after winning the governor’s race, Bob McDonnell called his supporters and asked that we hold his feet to the fire on his campaign promises. We intend to do just that.

DNC Chairman Tim Kaine
Former Richmond Mayor turned Virginia Governor and now Democratic National Committee Chairman Tim Kaine still does not understand the conservative trend happening in America.
After a resounding thumping in the Gubernatorial elections in Virginia last year, most people in his position would have seen the writing on the wall. Not Tim Kaine. Governor Bob McDonnell ran one of the most Conservative campaigns in a long time. The Democratic Party tried to use his Conservatism to paint McDonnell as a far right wing radical. The Democrats attempted to portray Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli as an even more radical right winger. Both won by large margins.
Tim Kaine failed to get the message when Conservative Chris Christie became Governor of New Jersey and when the Ted Kennedy senate seat moved into Republican hands.
Still, Tim Kaine believes the liberal message still resonates around the country as polls indicate a massive loss of Democratic seats in store for this fall.
Groups around the country like the Richmond Tea Party have been sounding the wake up call for Americans to shun this rapid move to the left the Democrats have plotted. And the message rings loud and clear. During the 2009 Virginia election cycle, many of the Tea Party participants became active in the Republican Party all over Virginia. This grassroots push is what led the first domino to fall as Republicans swept Virginia.
Around the country, Conservatives are working on two fronts. To right the GOP ship that has lost it’s way, and to elect Conservatives to office.
Those who believe that the Tea Party movement is a far right wing political party are totally off the mark. And to the dismay of those on the left, the Tea Party is not a wing of the Republican Party. Attempts to categorize or define the Tea Party by those on the left usually leave Tea Party participants quite amused.
Tim Kaine is no exception. After failing to comprehend the reasons for the Democrat’s losses in his home state of Virginia as well as New Jersey and Massachusetts, Kaine continues to misread the voter shift to the right in Utah.
On Saturday, incumbent Republican Senator Bob Bennett, seeking his 4th term, was ousted in a Republican convention for his track record supporting bailouts, mandated health care and a host of RINO (Republican in Name Only) sins.
Tim Kaine’s response shows his lack of understanding:
“Today the Tea Party strengthened its hold on the Republican Party by ousting Utah’s Senator Bob Bennett from the primary. That the Tea Party would consider Bob Bennett – one of the most conservative members of the U.S. Senate – too liberal, just goes to show how extreme the Tea Party is. This is just the latest battle in the corrosive Republican intra-party civil war that has resulted in the Tea Party devouring two Republicans in just as many weeks. If there was any question before, there should now be no doubt that the Republican leadership has handed the reigns to the Tea Party.”
What Kaine fails to realize is that the Tea Party has neither “taken over” the Republican Party in Utah, nor has the Republican Party “handed over the reigns” to the Tea Party.
What the Tea Party movement has done is shift the direction of the country to the right, energize the (formerly) silent majority and influence the Republican Party from within and from without to force the Republicans to run good, solid Conservatives who will put this country back on the track of limited government and personal responsibility.
Utah’s Convention was not a shot across the bow of the Democratic Party. Virginia, New Jersey and Massachusetts accomplished that. The Utah Convention is a shot across the bow of Republican RINO’s – especially incumbents.
RINO’s are officially on the endangered species list.

Blue Blogs Hope McDonnell Fails
As the blue winter ends and the warm red shades of spring and summer are welcomed by Virginians, the agonizing screams of the left wing progressive blue blogs can be heard over the roar of Virginia’s rivers, swollen by the melting remnants of what the left calls global warming. But these cries are not because Virginians and most Americans are seeing the lies and venom of the left, no indeed.
These are the howls of left wingers that were hoping Northrup-Grumman would relocate it’s Headquarters to Maryland. Or more correctly, anywhere but Virginia.
Sour grapes make a bitter whine. They were all hoping Bob McDonnell would fail. The claws and knives were sharpened, hoping that the Defense Industry giant would find anyplace else a better option. So, fresh from blaming the McDonnell Administration for the West Virginia mine explosion, the Iceland Volcano and the Gulf of Mexico oil platform explosion, these mentally challenged bloggers keep the laughs at their expense coming. It really takes a lot of pluck to be so filled with hate.
If you follow blue blogs, you know the ones I am talking about. (If you don’t, just google racist lowell feld and you will find over 43,000 links to them.) Like a chorus of hacking, mucus filled coughs, the Blue Blogs have turned Green with envy at the successes of the McDonnell Administration.
They were hoping for McDonnell and Virginia to fail.
There is no doubt that Bob McDonnell’s pro business policies, which the left has criticized relentlessly, are the reason businesses want to locate in Virginia. And the knowledge that Attorney General Cuccinelli will protect Virginia businesses from the overreaching Federal intrusions are a value added comfort.
Gone are the left wing policies that put companies like the Henrico County Qimonda plant into bankruptcy.
Bob McDonnell has proven Virginia is now open for business!

The Washington Post published a rather disturbing article yesterday on Senator Creigh Deeds, the Democratic Candidate for Governor last year.
While this blog supported Bob McDonnell in that race, during the process, I came away from the race with a lot of respect for Senator Deeds.
It seems many in the Democratic Party want to place the “blame” for last November’s loss totally on the Senator’s shoulders.
That is simply wrong.
Those accusers are blind to the fact that the 2009 Virginia elections were a referendum on not only Barack Obama, but the Progressives in Washington. And those that blame Deeds after Democratic losses in New Jersey and Massachusetts are obviously unable to see. Probably because their heads are so far up their own keesters.
It was hard for Deeds to look pretty with a 900 pound sack of Washington D.C. ugly around his neck.
And let’s also give Tim Kaine some of the credit, or blame as the case may be.
And while Bob McDonnell ran a splendid race, Creigh Deeds played the hand he was dealt.
I may disagree with Deeds on politics, but I believe he is truly a “Gentleman from Bath” in the traditional sense of a gentleman from years gone by. Back when the divide between Democrats was but a small obstical, easily stepped across and forgotten at day’s end.
One of the last remaining Democrats of old.
Not the petty, sniping velociraptor Democrats of today, blaming everyone but themselves and unable to see how their misguided views are destroying the country.
The article mentioned the Senator’s troubles at home, his snub from people that were supposed to be his friends, and the blame and accusations for his significant margin of loss in the last election.
I truly believe that Deeds received far more votes in 2009 than any of his primary opponents would have against McDonnell. Or any other Democrat would have for that matter. Voters are moving away from radical left wing politics, and Deeds is a far more centrist candidate than either of his primary opponents.
Perhaps Deeds should have run for Governor in 2005. Virginia would not be in as bad of a financial mess if Deeds were Governor instead of Kaine, I am sure.
My heart and prayers truly go out to Creigh Deeds. And I pray that he is given the strength rise above these troubled times in his life.
Politics is politics, but there are few remaining Democrats worthy of respect.
Creigh Deeds tops my list.
And to quote the ancient Vulcan philosopher Spock, “Live long and prosper, Senator.”

Dr. Christopher Metzler suffers racial attacks from the Left
Yep. Blue Virginia’s resident racist Lowell Feld is back at his hypocritical race baiting. Imagine, a racist like Lowell
calling out Bob McDonnell? After Lowell re-tweeted racist jokes
making fun of slaves. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black (pun intended).
Now, continuing the racist trend of the Democratic Party, On The Right has a post written by Frances Rice linking the KKK to the Democratic Party.
And Monica Crowley has a report on Big Government Dot Com detailing the devastating racist attacks on Dr. Christopher Metzler, Associate Dean of Continuing Studies at Georgetown University after appearing on Fox News and speaking out against the Health Care Reform bill and President Obama’s agenda in general. Metzler, an African American, is apparently not allowed to think for himself.
Visit Monica Crowley’s link to hear the voice mail recordings from Dr. Metzler’s voice mail.
WARNING: The callers use Racism and Profanity, including the “F” word. Please listen in an appropriate setting.
And in what can only be described as a repudiation of racists like Lowell Feld at Blue Virginia, Monica Crowley writes:
As Metzler explained to me, the Left engages in exactly the kind of disgusting, racist behavior which they unfairly and incorrectly accuse the Tea Party and all others who oppose Obama of engaging in. Unlike the Left, Metzler actually has the evidence to prove it. During his stunning interview, Metzler exposes the Left’s hypocrisy and dishonesty—and its very real racism.
Listen to the interview today:
You can hear the entire interview, along with Metzler’s response to the racist voicemail messages he’s received, on this weekend’s “Monica Crowley Show,” heard nationally and on 77WABC in New York from 1pm to 4pm ET (www.WABCRadio.com).

An open letter to Governor Bob McDonnell.
Dear Governor McDonnell;
During your run for Governor last year I spent a lot of time researching your legislative record and your record as Virginia’s Attorney General. I spoke with your wife, Maureen and your daughter Cailin about your life outside of politics. I reviewed your academic credentials and professional life prior to entering politics.
And I came to the conclusion that you are as fine an example of a husband and father as can be found. And your political and professional life have been a shining example of integrity and honesty. I was impressed by your struggles to balance work, school and family at the same time and by how you excelled in all three as a young man.
And during your campaign for Governor, I watched as you fought the constant barrage from the left as they hurled salvo after salvo of vicious lies and distortions at you. I saw a true leader arise in battle as you stuck to your message, convinced that your vision for the Commonwealth was the correct path.
Virginians were so inspired with you and your leadership that we voted you into office with margins of historic proportion.
After your victory, you held a conference call with your supporters and asked that we hold your feet to the fire. At that point, I truly believed that would be unnecessary.
Sadly, I feel I must fulfill your request based on two recent events.
The first was the incident with Attorney General Cuccinelli. Although his opinion on special protections under Virginia Law is correct, and essentially the same opinion you issued while Attorney General, you released a craftily worded letter of appeasement that, while not disagreeing with the AG’s opinion outright, essentially undermined the office you used to represent.
Many think you threw Cuccinelli under the bus, and I do not disagree with that assessment. I truly wish I could.
One measure of a true leader is the ability to deal with controversy. I fully understand that this issue was fast becoming a national nightmare and a distraction to the important problems facing our nation and the Commonwealth, but I was convinced that you possessed the leadership skills to deal with a problem such as this without sacrificing our Attorney General.
I am still convinced you possess these skills, but I am disappointed that you decided to take the easy way out and not use the leadership abilities that put you in Virginia’s highest office.
And the second incident is the current Confederate History Month flap. The unfortunate manner in which you dispatched the Cuccinelli incident has left you vulnerable and weak, and the press and the Liberals are quite aware of this. And your immediate appeasement has now established a pattern that could very well define your legacy as Virginia’s Governor.
The strong leader that battled stiff resistance during the campaign is now gone. Replaced by a person that is afraid of criticism and no longer leads by conviction, but based on how much negative press he receives.
Surely you are aware what is happening, right? Had you initially recognized slaves in this proclamation, the press would have excoriated you for opening old wounds and the lefty blogs would be buzzing about how you long to return to the days of slavery. Now they will begin attacking you for not thinking things through and flip-flopping.
And these incidents will no doubt make your administration water down anything that could be seen as controversial and relegate you to 4 years of milk-toast, mediocre, gun shy leadership.
The press is now able to lead you by the nose on any issue. Your office has been neutered in 90 days and you allowed this to happen.
Perhaps your need to appease all who criticize you is a manifestation of your desire for higher office a few years from now. The trouble is, those you seek to appease would never vote for you under any circumstances. And those that would have supported you and followed you to the ends of the earth now must reconsider this allegiance.
You asked me to hold your feet to the fire and I intend to do just that. Virginia and America need strong Conservative leadership if we are to return this country to the land of Freedom and Opportunity that you and I, as Veterans, both fought to protect.
You showed the world what a leader is by conducting a focused campaign that inspired us and gave us hope.
Please don’t abandon us now. We really need you to be the leader we elected, now more than ever!

Published: April 4, 2010
An extraordinary contrast is emerging between the style and philosophy of governing as practiced in the executive mansion just north of the Potomac River and the Executive Mansion just north of the James River.
In Washington, President Obama is borrowing, taxing, and spending with abandon — with little apparent concern about the long-term consequences of his unprecedented expansion of government control of the economy and the claims it will make on future earnings of the American people. The president’s agenda relies on one-party power and minimal attempts at compromise.
In Richmond, on the other hand, Gov. Bob McDonnell has just closed a $4 billion budget deficit without raising taxes. To do so, he made significant cuts in a budget that had expanded by more than 70 percent in a decade — better than 28 percent for every citizen in Virginia (in inflation-adjusted dollars).
In a meeting with The Times-Dispatch last month, the governor said making the cuts were “the most difficult decisions I’ve made in 19 years of public life.” He made them nevertheless — and helped persuade a state Senate controlled by Democrats and a House of Delegates controlled by Republicans to accept the necessary reductions in government expenditures while protecting the family budgets of ordinary Virginians.
McDonnell met the claims of those who insist that government must always grow — even when growth in the private sector has stalled — with the obvious but too rare assertion that limiting public spending is not only unavoidable in the wake of a deep recession, but sometimes healthy. “We are a very prosperous state . . . .We do have room, as painful as it is, to make these reductions in a prudent way,” he said last month.
Facing the most challenging state budget gap in at least a generation, McDonnell crafted a bipartisan compromise that allowed the General Assembly to adjourn just one day later than planned.

As most of you know, I rarely take a day off from blogging. I am still among the living, but I had some unexpectedly unwelcome news last week. My daughter, who lives in Tidewater and graduates this May from CNU, gets married in June and begins Medical School in August informed me she needs my 1040 Form for FAFSA by Monday.
I just filed for an extension and have until September to procrastinate.
Not any more.
So, I had to do taxes for my Company first, a massive undertaking, before I could do my individual taxes.
So, I have been hunkered down with mounds of papers and two versions of TurboTax all weekend. I managed a few posts yesterday, but today, with the deadline looming, I did not have the time.
Now I am done! I have good news for Barack Obama and bad news for Bob McDonnell. Barry, the check will be in the mail at the absolute last second. Bob, you get to pay my Federal Taxes. Most of them anyway.
If there were ever a case for State’s rights, this is it.
And Barry, I promise to plan better for next year. I really don’t want to feed your habit again.
I will be back in the morning with the News Hound and more of my nonsensical drivel.
I mean – words of wisdom.
Right now there is a Bass Ale chilling in my fridge that I hope will take the eye strain and headache far away.

Barack Obama said “We won!”. And while Virginia Republicans would not be as crass as President Obama, res ipsa loquitur. And the Republican victory in Virginia last November was both a landslide and a mandate. The people have spoken. Democrats are out of touch and the conservative message was well received and reflected by the voters.
And because Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli is doing the job the people elected him to do, Democrats Donald McEachin and Jennifer McClellan pull out the race card.
From the Times Dispatch:
In a noon news conference, Sen. A. Donald McEachin, D-Henrico, charged that Cuccinelli is advancing “a right wing agenda” with the blessing of Gov. Bob McDonnell, and said the attorney general is pursuing a fight with the federal government over other issues, among them chasing down predatory lenders.
And when the issue of state’s rights arose, so did this state’s scarred racial past.
Asked by a reporter about any parallels between Virginia’s opposition to desegregation decades ago and its current fight against health care reform, Del. Jennifer L. McClellan, D-Richmond, said “absolutely.“
“If you ask them, a lot of people today are embarrassed by the fact that 50 years ago we engaged in Massive Resistance and regret that we did that, and realize that was a huge waste of time that had a detrimental impact on a whole generation of children who were prevented from going to school,“ she said.
Please. Give me a break!
The accusations that have been floated by some on the left that Attorney General Cuccinelli is somehow a racist for opposing a bill pushed by Obama could also be said of Democrats attacking Cuccinelli. And both would be wrong.
If Cuccinelli was not pushing a “right wing agenda” that includes less federal intervention, smaller government and lower taxes, he would not be doing what he was elected in a landslide to do. The constant drone from the left wing media that Cuccinelli was “right wing” appealed to voters, tired of the left wing takeover by Obama. Instead of driving voters away from Cuccinellt, it drove them to vote for the Conservative message he brought.
All this race baiting and sour grapes from the leftists is nothing more than the usual Liberal tactic to change the subject because they know they are wrong to support this massive government intrusion into the lives of Virginians. Your support of these Socialistic policies is the very reason you lost Virginia. The voters demanded protection from the Progressive agenda in Washington.
And if there was anything truly reformative about this legislation, you would be spending your time lauding the benefits. Since there is nothing but debt for our children and higher costs for us, as well as lost jobs, you are relegated not just to obscurity, but to obstructionism.
Advice to Democrats: Grow up and stop being the Virginia party of No!

It is the perfect Sunday afternoon to spend a few minutes reviewing the very first issue of Bearing Drift’s Magazine.
The premier issue appropriately features Virginia’s Governor, Bob McDonnell.
Jim Hoeft has managed to produce a magazine worthy of his work with Bearing Drift, the blog. This is absolutely a professional work. And Jane Dudley, Photo Editor has managed to complement the magazine with eye popping photographs.
A must see!

I do not usually quote the Baltimore Sun nor am I especially interested in New Jersey politics but I could not resist it when the Sun’s Ron Smith starts out his op-ed like this:
In these times of economic distress, massive job losses, shrunken businesses, bloated governments and runaway public spending, we’ve been waiting for some politician (other than Ron Paul) to stand and tell the truth.
Smith is of course right about Ron Paul (who won his GOP primary with 80% of the vote on Tuesday). But Smith was not talking about the Texas Congressman, he was talking about the bold step that Governor Chris Christie took in deciding to balance the state’s budget without raising taxes. Christie was clear:
But behold! The newly elected governor of New Jersey, Republican Chris Christie, stood in front of 200 of his state’s mayors last week and told them basically that there is no more road down which to kick that proverbial can. In his speech at the New Jersey League of Municipalities, Mr. Christie began by calling the legislature’s $29 billion budget something out of “Alice in Wonderland.” He told the collected hizzoners that the old game of tax and spend was over. He described unhappy meetings in his treasurer’s office, where he was presented with 378 possible freezes and lapses to be used to balance the budget. He accepted 375 of them.
Like Bob McDonnell here in Virginia, Christie’s tough cuts and talk will not make friends with some groups:
No doubt there will be a political firestorm in New Jersey as the pinch is felt by politically powerful entities such as the teachers, police and firefighters unions. Whether he can survive tackling the growing fiscal crisis with actual solutions is the question.
This is virtually the same fight that will happen in Virginia. I heard on the radio the question about how the high school football coaches will work for free as Gov. McDonnell has proposed and I have heard that people are complaining that McDonnell will keep rest areas open but cut education. Conservatives and Republicans must stand behind Governor McDonnell even if we are niot sure we fully agree. It is tough times. He’s got to make the decision. Let’s give him a chance.
And Smith warns us the consequences:
Chris Christie will need a lot of public support in his efforts to put the Garden State’s house in order; with the public in New Jersey and all across the land depending on government largesse more than ever before, can that actually be expected to happen? A lot rides on the answer to that question. If he can’t succeed in this vitally needed reordering of government taxing and spending habits, who elsewhere will be able to, and what instead will happen?
Let’s support Bob McDonnell.
