Governor Allen Aids Red Cross With Book Sale Donations

Editor’s note: If you have not picked up your copy of Governor Allen’s new book, this is your perfect opportunity. I requested (and received) my copy for father’s day and can tell you it is a unique perspective on the intersection of the world of sports and the world of politics that only George Allen could pen. You need only be a fan of life to love this book! – Tom

In his new book, “What Washington Can Learn From The World of Sports”, former Governor and U.S. Senator George Allen describes some of the most memorable moments in sports history—and the lessons politicians can learn from them. On July 14 at 3 pm Red Cross supporters will have a chance to interact personally with Gov. Allen in a live webcast and get an original autographed first edition of his book at www.Autographaroo.com.  The American Red Cross in the National Capital Region will benefit from this program.

Through the magic of the Internet and Autographaroo (https://www.autographaroo.com/pages.php?pageid=1) Gov. Allen will designate Red Cross to receive net proceeds from the autograph session and interact with his fans. The live webcast lasts approximately 30 minutes. The format is an interview with the Governor which will be moderated by Bill Thompson, newscaster at WMAL radio in Washington DC and founder of EyeOnBooks.com.  The autographed books will be sold during, before and after the live session. The Red Cross will be the beneficiary of the net proceeds for all the books sales as long as the books are available in the Autographaroo web store.

George F. Allen served the Commonwealth of Virginia for over twenty years as Governor, in both bodies of the United States Congress, and as a Delegate holding Thomas Jefferson’s seat in the Virginia General Assembly. His wife, Susan Allen, is an active member of the Board of the American Red Cross in the National Capital Region. “I selected the Red Cross in the National Capital Region because of their truly caring, energetic teamwork in helping all people in need when disasters occur”, said Allen.

“Preparation was one of my father’s fundamental keys to success for his teams and it sums up what the Red Cross does in communities: it teaches citizens how to prepare for disaster with life saving skills. When disaster does strike, the Red Cross mobilizes its volunteers and resources and truly helps people in need.”

“We are honored that Governor Allen chose the Red Cross to benefit through the sale of his book and we are delighted that he has found such an innovative way to help us,” said Linda Mathes, American Red Cross CEO in the National Capital Region. “We are grateful for his ongoing support and respect all that he and the First Lady have done for our community.”

Annual SWAC Mom / Eric Cantor Birthday Party

Congressman Eric Cantor - at his Birthday Celebration

Congressman Eric Cantor - at his Birthday Celebration

It has become an annual event, no doubt about it. The SWAC Mom / Eric Cantor Birthday Party at the Science Museum of Virginia in Richmond gives me the opportunity to catch up on all the events of the past year with SWAC Girl’s Mom. For those who have not yet had the pleasure of meeting SWAC Girl, or her Mom, you are really missing a lot!

SWAC Mom always claims her memory is not what it used to be, but then she recites, word for word, all of the posts for all of the Virginia blogs for the past month. She is like a silver haired verson of a human Google, only more informative. I was proud to say that I did best SWAC Mom this year. I had already seen the amazing picture of a newborn fawn on SWAC Girl’s blog, and SWAC Mom had heard about it, but not yet seen it. So I was one up on her. That will probably never happen again.

The crowd this year for Eric Cantor’s 47th birthday was larger than last year, but the Cantor team was prepared. Food, beverage, good friends. What more could one want. Perhaps 10 degrees cooler would have been nice. It was a hot one.

Congressman Cantor gave a powerful speech as he said America is at a crossroads. One path leads to more government, more debt, more taxes and less freedom, and the other path is the road we have been on that made America the beacon of hope to the world it has always been.

Cantor also asked for volunteers to help with his reelection so Republicans can take back the House and the Cantor Team passed out bumper stickers. Eric reminded everyone of what George Allen used to say. “A bumper sticker on a car is worth $300, or $600 on a truck.”

Congressman Cantor reminded the crowd that the voters of Virginia and the country had fired Republicans. The party had lost it’s fiscally conservative roots and drifted away from Republican beliefs of smaller government and personal responsibility. The Republican Young Guns are one of the answers to returning to the Republican Roots. From the Young Guns Website:

America is standing at a critical crossroads, and Young Guns candidates give America the best opportunity to move our country in the right direction.

Founded in the 2007-2008 election cycle by Congressmen Eric Cantor (R-VA), Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and Paul Ryan (R-WI), the Young Guns Program began as a Member driven organization of House Republicans dedicated to identifying, recruiting, and mobilizing a new generation of conservative leaders.

During the last election, through a partnership of Republican volunteers, donors and 59 members of the House of Representatives, five House GOP challengers won against Incumbent Democrats in 2008. Four of those were Young Guns, and we proudly welcome them to Congress – Tom Rooney (FL-16), Bill Cassidy (LA-06), Lynn Jenkins (KS-02), and Pete Olson (TX-22).

Congressman Cantor also encouraged everyone to visit You Cut, a website set up to allow citizens to vote on an item to cut from the budget. Each week, the Republicans bring the winning entry up for a vote. Many of the savings are substantial. A $30 billion savings could be realized from reforming Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and other budget cutting ideas are there as well.

So, there is much going on to win back the country. Republicans realize that they have been a part of the problem. Congressman Cantor is looking forward to retaking the House and returning America to prosperity.

A thunderstorm was brewing, but held off long enough for the program to come to an end.

Russia Beats US to East Coast Off Shore Drilling

While Obama and the Democrats sit on their green thumbs group thinking energy from star and fairy dust, Russia has decided to drill off the coast of Cuba. I suppose that if we don’t want the oil, they will take it and sell it to us when the greenie weenie thing fails, like all Obama programs do.

A Washington Times Editorial today states:

The Obama administration is poised to ban offshore oil drilling on the outer continental shelf until 2012 or beyond. Meanwhile, Russia is making a bold strategic leap to begin drilling for oil in the Gulf of Mexico. While the United States attempts to shift gears to alternative fuels to battle the purported evils of carbon emissions, Russia will erect oil derricks off the Cuban coast.

Offshore oil production makes economic sense. It creates jobs and helps fulfill America’s vast energy needs. It contributes to the gross domestic product and does not increase the trade deficit. Higher oil supply helps keep a lid on rising prices, and greater American production gives the United States more influence over the global market.

Former Virginia Governor George Allen had this to say about the Russian drilling:

The Castro Brothers with Russia are planning to drill 5O miles off the coast of Florida , but our cockeyed federal government shuts down the whole eastern seaboard of the US. Virginia and other willing States should be allowed to permit safe exploration off our coast. Indeed, I would rather use oil or gas from Virginia than Cuba or Venezuela.- George Allen

For those not aware, Governor Allen heads the American Energy Freedom Center and is heavily involved in working to see American Energy – and Virginia Energy resources – used to cut our dependence on foreign oil. Please click on the link and visit the Center for more information on what you can do to help, and more information and facts on America’s energy.

George Allen Exposes Misleading Post at Blue Virginia

Let it never be said that Blue Virginia missed an opportunity mislead or distort a fact to further the Socialist agenda. In this post, former Governor George Allen exposes the myopically misleading statements so typical of the desperate tactics of a rapidly declining Democratic party.

This is a major embarrassment for Blue Virginia. But these outright distortions deserve to be exposed.

George Allen’s statement follows:

Coal Jobs Vital for Virginia, AmericaCoal Jobs Vital for Virginia, America
www.georgeallen.com/2010/02/28/coal-jobs-vital-for-virginia-america
By George Allen

It is wise to diversify job opportunities in the Coalfields of Southwest Virginia and elsewhere in Appalachia. But these writers, who are against or unfriendly to coal, are concocting misleading facts to diminish the positive attributes of American coal.

The Reality is that coal mining provides very good-paying jobs for those involved directly in mining as well as for people who manufacture and supply mining equipment and those who transport coal to electric power plants, steel mills and our Virginia Ports. A job is important to all men and women whether in retail or mining. These writers miss the fact that coal-related jobs pay more than retail jobs.

All of us who use electricity benefit from American coal, which by all measurement is the most available, reliable and least expensive source of power. Beyond the hundreds of thousands of American jobs related to American coal, the coal severance taxes in Southwest Virginia actually help fund the attraction of new businesses via the Coalfields Economic Development Authority.

As a country, we are blessed with plentiful coal resources. Rather than become more dependent on foreign, more expensive or intermittent energy sources, let’s creatively and cleanly utilize our American coal.

Saturday Statistic: Just “2 percent of employment in the central Appalachian region”
Saturday, February 27, 2010
Blue Virginia Blog

From this morning’s Washington Post comes a factual response to those who claim, against all evidence to the contrary, that the highly mechanized form of coal extraction known as “mountaintop removal” is a major employer in Appalachia (or anywhere else). As Justin Maxson, president of the Mountain Association for Community Economic Development, explains, it’s not.

GEORGE ALLEN: Americans Want Job Opportunity and Debt Reduction Ideas Emitted From Government

Statement from former Governor George Allen

Allen: “Americans want job opportunity and debt reduction ideas emitted from government.”

Mt. Vernon, Va. – Former Governor and U.S. Senator George Allen issued the following statement today in reaction to President Obama’s new rules that the federal government reduce its emissions by 28% over the next decade:

“President Obama’s call for a 28% reduction in the federal government’s emissions is a worthy goal if it reduces taxpayers’ costs by 28%. Government must operate more efficiently by adopting the most innovative technologies, systems and equipment for heating, cooling, and illuminating government buildings, and reducing transportation and operational costs.

“Virginians and Americans wish to be served by an Administration looking to cut government spending as well as government emissions. Washington is creating a nightmare scenario with unprecedented deficits, steep inflation and potential sharp tax increases to pay for burgeoning debt. Americans are concerned that this unprecedented, dangerous debt will mean our children will not enjoy the same levels of opportunity that past American generations have enjoyed to achieve the American Dream.

“The Administration’s “spending freeze”, which amounts to a less than 1% reduction in spending sometime after elections this November, does not go far enough. Additionally, although the White House anticipates $15 billion in savings with this “freeze”, it has already spent almost $900 billion on a failed stimulus that has created no jobs, and is proposing upwards of $100 billion more in “stimulus”. We the people call on the President and Congress to set spending reduction goals closer to 28% than 1%.”

George Allen Watch!!!

I just set my DVR to record Governor George Allen today on Fox News Channel’s “Happening Now” with Jon Scott and Jane Skinner at 11:30 am ET. He will discuss whether or not the Democrats will scale back on the push for health care reform in light of Scott Browns inspiring victory.

(Thank you “satellite company” for letting me do this remotely.)

On a personal note, it is really great to see Governor Allen and his wife Susan working so hard for Virginia and the Country. I seem to run into them at nearly every event I attend. Their tireless efforts on behalf of Virginia have had a tremendous impact on the successes of the Republican Party, but mostly on all Virginians. Please check out the American Energy Freedom Center the Governor is involved with and sign the petition. Thank you.

Governor Allen released the following statement on the Massachusetts Senate race victory by Scott Brown:

Mt. Vernon, Va. – Former Governor and U.S. Senator George Allen issued the following statement today, Congratulating Scott Brown and calling on Washington Democrats to “start over” on health care reform.

“Susan and I congratulate Scott Brown for his impressive, inspiring victory and for running an honest, ideas-based campaign.

“I’m sure we can all find it wonderfully ironic that one of the Tea Parties’ greatest victories to date came in Massachusetts, which is where this movement derived its name and philosophy. Scott Brown’s historic election is getting the attention of Washington officials who need to listen to the American people. I think we will be watching with great interest in the days and weeks ahead to see how some in Washington will run for cover trying to hide their role in the massively expensive government-run health care experiment, while others may defiantly push forward to pass it in the face of clear opposition from Americans all across the country.

“I call on Democrats to join their Republican colleagues to start over and put forth common sense health care reforms. Options such as Health Savings Accounts could benefit all Americans and make health insurance more affordable, personalized and portable rather than enacting more national debt, higher taxes dictates and unfunded mandates from Washington.

“I also hope that Democrats avoid any gamesmanship while seating Scott Brown. As he pointed out during his campaign, this is the people’s seat and they spoke loud and clear last night.”
