The little weasel Tom Periello made Sarah Palin’s S%*t list. Whoever the Republican candidate happens to be may be looking at a bit of help from former Governor of the last frontier.
Make fun of Palin if you wish, but her ability to rally the conservative base is not in doubt. And neither is Periello’s impending retirement.
This young man, Francisco Rodriguez, is running for the Florida House and is an extremely bright and determined individual. He supports Marco Rubio because of his strong commitment to the Constitution. (But he is not endorsing anyone yet.)
This young man embodies the ideals and beliefs that bind Conservatives together. The last couple of minutes of this video, Rodriguez speaks to the reasons Latinos overwhelmingly vote Democrat. Virginia Right! has been saying for some time that we must make a greater effort to reach out to the Latino community. I have been fortunate enough to meet and become friends with a great many Conservative Latino men and women and in this video Rodriguez puts to words what I have seen with my Latino friends.
Francisco Rodriguez, a conservative Republican candidate for the Florida House, says the GOP must reach out more to Latinos to draw them away from voting Democratic.
“Republicans need to make sure Latinos get to keep the money they earn, because they work hard for it just like anyone else,” he told Newsmax.TV’s Ashley Martella.
“They need to have good family values, because Latinos are very family oriented, and they need to run Latinos for office, because they connect well with their own.”
As long as “Nobody” is a generic Republican. A new Gallup poll finds that an unnamed generic Republican is in a dead heat with Obama for the White House.
Registered voters are about equally divided as to whether they would more likely vote to re-elect Barack Obama in the 2012 presidential election, or vote for the Republican candidate.
These results are based on a Feb. 1-3 Gallup poll. Forty-four percent of U.S. registered voters say they are more likely to vote for Obama, 42% for the Republican candidate, and the remaining 14% are undecided or would vote for another candidate.
Good news, indeed!
A good, strong Republican candidate will decisively send the Narcissist in Chief back to Chicago. Or Hawaii. Or wherever he is from.
We all want to be sure our candidates “fit” the mold that we, as Conservatives, put in place. Much has been written on Dede Scozzafava, the NY-23 RINO that pretended to be a Republican. But is a litmus test a good idea to avoid this?
On the surface, it sounds good. But it should surprise no one that people will say anything to get elected, then forget the promises they made in the heat of the election. (President Obama ring a bell?)
The Washington Times published an article written by Ford O’Connell and Steve Pearson, the co-founders of ProjectVirginia on this subject that is a must read.
Dede Scozzafava was the Republican candidate in last year’s special election in New York’s 23rd Congressional District, but she truly was a Republican for convenience. She had voted for nearly 200 tax increases in the New York Legislature. She was far from the conservative mainstream on economic, defense and social issues. But she had substantial name recognition, a formidable pile of money and a willingness to say or do whatever it took to get elected. She even signed the Americans for Tax Reform (ATR) pledge not to vote for tax increases if elected to Congress.
We all know how it ended. A true conservative, running as an independent, passed her in the polls. So she quit the race, threw her support to the Democrat and caused the loss of a seat that had been in Republican hands for more than 100 years.
And in a follow-up article by Ralph Z. Hallow, it appears that the common sense approach favored by O’Connell and Pearson at ProjectVirginia was passed unanimously by the Republican National Committee on Friday.
Hopefully, the Republicans can say Bye-Bye to more Dede clones in the future.
Virginia Right! Recommends Michael Gage for Delegate!
The voters in the 74th Virginia House District have a chance to dump the ineffective representation they have suffered with these last two years. Republican Candidate Michael Gage has worked hard, made phone calls knocked on doors, held Town Hall meetings, meet and greets, and attended forums and any other opportunity to show voters what they have been missing these last two years: A Delegate that will work for the 74th District!
Gage has been endorsed by the entire Republican State Ticket: Bob McDonnell, Bill Bolling and Ken Cuccinelli. In addition, Congressman Eric Cantor has endorsed Gage.
Michael Gage is a businessman and understands the needs of the area. He has met with business leaders in the community to discuss how best to assist them with providing an environment to foster job creation and how these business leaders can assist the District by buying materials locally – right in the 74th District.
I have had the personal pleasure of getting to know Michael Gage and his wife, Karen. They are hosting a very bright Foreign Exchange Student and helping to enrich the community with cultural diversity from around the world. I can honestly say, Michael Gage has a big heart and and an honest desire to improve the lives of the people in the district. He is a smart and innovative man that has the ability to think outside the box and look at solutions to problems others have not even considered.
Gage is not a politician. He is a businessman with common sense. Something the Commonwealth and the 74th District desperately need.
Virginia Right! enthusiastically endorses and recommends that you cast your vote on November 3, 2009 for Michael Gage.
He will not let you down. Please visit the Campaign Web Site for more information!
Nothing says support better than your supporters making up their own fliers to say what you should have said. Embarrassed by Deeds’ lack of any type of Transportation plan, and seeing the entire Democratic ticket becoming the laughing stock of the Commonwealth, the Fairfax Democrats have decided to make up their own message to help out humiliated Democrats trying to explain the unexplainable.
A sputtering message, muddled with “everything’s on the table” spewed so many times in order to attempt to give supporters something to say, other than the “Deeds will raise your taxes” truth, was making Democrats look silly. Well, that and Deeds himself.
The City of Fairfax Democratic Committee has produced its own hand card of talking points for Creigh Deeds. The joint effort is being printed and distributed for use in door knocking and conversations (like in the grocery store, for example). The Committee, dissatisfied with the hand cards and flyers offered by the campaign, put their heads together and the following is the result. Included are points for Creigh Deeds, Jody Wagner, Steve Shannon, and David Bulova (Delegate for Fairfax City Area, 37th House District).
And as the RPV puts it:
Deeds: No Roads Plan – Fairfax Dems Forced to Wing It
The new-and-improved hand card includes this prompt for Deeds and Democratic grassroots workers to employ to harass their neighbors while shopping:
* Transportation: [Deeds] Will assemble a bipartisan commission to craft a comprehensive transportation plan
This vague promise of gathering people at a table to assess what is on the table, while everything is on the table is exactly the sort of gobbledygook Deeds spouts on most occasions.
We can happily report that Republicans and more importantly, voters are quite pleased with the in depth Transportation plan Republican Candidate has penned.
Volunteers for the Republican ticket are helping the McDonnell campaign by taking a comprehensive message of Transportation, Jobs, Education, Property Rights and Economic recovery to the doorsteps of voters. And the polls show this is what voters expect.
The Deeds campaign is now being second guessed by their own imploding support base. Deeds can’t even craft a message that his volunteers want to carry. How does he expect to craft a plan to fix Virginia’s problems?
Looks like Thanksgiving Dinner is already being served at Deeds table. Turkey and stuffing for all.
Democratic candidate for Governor Creigh Deeds has a new ad out that was promoted by The Washington Post today. The ad and article attempt to pin blame on Republican candidate Bob McDonnell for supporting Appalachian Power’s requests for rate increases.
The article states:
“The State Corporation Commission approves all increases, not the Attorney General’s office,” said McDonnell spokesman J. Tucker Martin. “Given that Creigh ran for attorney general he knows that. We guess he just chose to ignore it.”
Deeds promises to “protect consumers and small businesses from rate increases”.
Deeds energy plan says Deeds will “support cleaner coal research and enforce rigorous air quality standards for coal-fired plants. Forty-five percent of Virginia’s electricity currently comes from coal. Creigh will invest in the cleaner coal research and technology like carbon capture and sequestration practices that are currently occurring at Virginia Tech, Abingdon, and at Dickenson County in Clintwood. Creigh will also enforce rigorous air quality standards for current and future coal-fired plants..”
If Deeds bothered to check Appalachian Power’s web site, he would see that the utilization of the new, cleaner technology is already happening.
Exactly how does Deeds propose the new cleaner technology he supports will be paid for? Opposing rate increases will put a halt to this new technology and lead to the eventual shut down of the Coal Fired electrical plants, putting millions of Virginians in the dark and leading to massive layoffs and job loss. And many of these are union workers.
Deeds is wrong again. Bob McDonnell understands that there is a balance and a cost to all of the programs that will clean up our air and our environment. You must allow the company the rate increases to fund the environmentally friendly technology, pay for it with state funds, or watch the company fail.
Bob McDonnell comes down on the side of a cleaner environment, jobs and the lowest possible rates that is a win-win proposition for Virginians.
Deeds short sightedness will continue the incompetence of the Kaine Administration and continue to cause Virginians more pain, debt and lost jobs.
It’s rather ironic that Bob McDonnell has spoken against Cap and Trade and has warned that it will increase rates for electricity. This stuff must be paid for. These increases are keeping up with Federal Mandates, but Democrats like Deeds are oblivious to the fact that we will be fleeced by these policies. Deeds simply proves Bob McDonnell’s point.
Democratic Candidate for Governor Creigh Deeds seems to have a theory. All state revenue defaults to Education, therefore, any money spent elsewhere is a reduction in Education spending. It does not really matter how important the non Educational expenditures are. Republican Candidate Bob McDonnell’s plans to use revenue above predictions, which is not earmarked for Education, for Transportation somehow takes money from Education. The strange thing is, Deeds seems to forget that School Buses need safe roads to transport kids to school.
So, while the irresponsible fiscal policies of Current Governor Tim Kaine and Jody Wagner are causing massive cuts in Education, money that they were counting on from the Commonwealth, Deeds ignores that and is running around accusing McDonnell of planning to cut Education.
Oh, and somehow it’s former President George W. Bush’s fault as well.
Republican Candidate for the 100th Va. House District candidate Melody Scalley held a pair of events on the Eastern Shore with former Virginia Governor and US Senator George Allen and Susan Allen. The first event was a pig roast at Baysys Technologies, Inc., one of the largest employers on the Eastern Shore.
After enjoying the food and refreshments provided by Baysys founder and CEO Steve Walton, Governor Allen took the microphone and spoke for a few minutes on the issues facing Virginia and the country. Governor Allen’s wit and wisdom, honed in both State and Federal government, reflected his unique perspective as he spoke.
One of Allen’s major concerns with the current administration in Washington is the irresponsible way in which the Obama Administration is running up the Federal debt. Of equal concern is the Cap and Trade bill, which he sees as the Administration’s move to control energy. He said many are poised to make huge profits from the bill, should it pass.
Governor Allen feels so strongly on this issue that he founded the American Energy Freedom Center to emphasize the resources that we have in Virginia that can be used to move us away from foreign oil.
Note: This is such an important foundation that we will have an in depth look at the American Energy Freedom Center in a soon to be posted blog.
Governor Allen then introduced the first female candidate ever for the 100th House seat, Melody Scalley. From his introduction, it is obvious he has spent a good bit of time with Ms. Scalley. Virginia Right! first posted an article on her in June of this year and we have remained up to date and excited about her campaign. Governor Allen described Melody Scalley as one that truly “get’s it”. She stands for smaller government, fiscal responsibility and providing an environment to encourage business growth.
After a round of applause from the nearly 100 supporters and those meeting her for the first time, Ms. Scalley showed why George Allen has faith and confidence in her.
She explained her vision for the 100th District, her passion for the Eastern Shore (and the bit of Norfolk in the district), but she spoke mostly on the issues.
Governor George Allen
The issues and concerns of the Eastern Shore residents are mostly shared with the rest of the Commonwealth, but it’s unique location and geography add some concerns not found in other areas. Route 13, the main road through the Eastern Shore is a main route for commerce and travel up and down the DelMarVa Peninsula. This topic was discussed at the Baysys event and also at the later Reception at the Parksley Fire House reception. The number of accidents and fatalities on Route 13 are one of the top concerns of residents. This is the route traveled to work and school, as well as the commerce and tourism traffic. People must merge onto this road, and inattention by drivers, who are often speeding has caused major problems.
The State Police are doing what they can, and are visible, but there are simply not enough to cover the area. Rumble strips at the traffic lights were turned down by Governor Tim Kaine’s VDOT administrators. Ms. Scalley has made this one of her top issues.
The event ended shortly after 4:00 PM, and several people traveled the few miles to Parksley, Va. for the second event of the day. Fortunately, Melody Scalley and George and Susan Allen were among them.
Parksley, Va. is the type of town that everyone says is the kind of place to raise your kids. When you see the small shops and rail through the center of town, you immediately know you have discovered a true Virginia treasure.
The Firehouse where the reception was held is a modern and well equipped facility. And busy. Three calls were heard while the meeting was ongoing. The meeting room was the perfect place for the Town Hall meeting and Reception. Speaking with the residents, you find a down home attitude and a spirit the I feared was long gone in Virginia. And a warm welcome to all. The sense of community and pride in the Eastern Shore is something you notice right away. This is not Northern Virginia, not by a long shot.
Billy Graham hosted the event and gave a glowing introduction to Governor Allen. (Mr. Graham is an engaging speaker, but is not related to the minister.) This crowd was smaller, perhaps 40 or so, and there were a number of different faces. Again, Governor Allen introduced Ms. Scalley, and she had a few points to make.
“I am not a politician, I am not politically correct, and I am not a lawyer”, Scalley exclaimed. This brought a thunder of applause and cheers. “The bills our State Legislature crafts are so long winded and complicated because they are written by lawyers who want job security”, she continued.
A number of topics were discussed, but Melody Scalley is especially passionate about Education. “Let the money follow the child” is her mantra on school choice and school vouchers. The Home Schoolers in the crowd were very impressed with what they heard, as was the rest of the crowd.
The voters of the 100th District have a choice this year. And Melody Scalley is a hard worker with a good grasp of the issues and the Constitution. And as Governor Allen said, she get’s it.
The Washington Times reports that Democratic Candidate for Governor Creigh Deeds admitted yesterday that some of his own views have changed since 1989.
Republican Candidate for Governor Bob McDonnell has said that since writing the thesis in 1989 that has garnered much attention from Deeds the past week, his life experiences have changed his views on many of the items in the 20 year old paper.
Mr. McDonnell said he no longer believes that working women and feminists are detrimental to families or that the state has a right to discriminate against “cohabitators, homosexuals or fornicators.”
The Times also stated:
Concerning his own record, Mr. Deeds acknowledged voting in the Senate in 2005 and 2006 to put the proposed state constitutional amendment banning same-sex unions in Virginia on the ballot for a statewide ratification vote. But he said he voted against it in the November 2006 referendum.
So Deeds says he voted for the Constitutional Amendment banning gay marriage before he voted against it. Talk about changing views.
Deeds also says he was against closing the “gun show loophole” before he was for closing it. Lovely!
After hearing McDonnell say his views have changed in the last 20 years and he no longer believes much of what he wrote back then, and Deeds himself admitting that his own views have changed on many things over those 20 years, Deeds went back to attacking McDonnell on the thesis.
Another day, another pile of false claims from Democratic candidate for the 73rd House seat Tom Shields’ manager Tony Coppola.
Coppola continues his ridiculous attack on Delegate O’Bannon babbling something about O’Bannon repudiating Republican candidate for Governor Bob McDonnell because of McDonnell’s Catholic beliefs on contraception, abortion and how best to raise a family.
Has Coppola forgotten his own Catholic background? Does he now reject the Catholic morals and principals that just a couple of short years back he found so important? As a student at Boston College, Class of 2006, Tony Coppola issued a manifesto of his own when Condoleezza Rice was invited to speak at the graduation ceremony. The Catholic and Jesuit teachings he held so dear at that time enraged him to spew the hateful diatribe below in support of the teachings of the Catholic Church and the Vatican.
It seems that now, Coppola is asking O’Bannon to repudiate McDonnell’s beliefs that are exactly the same position the Pope holds.
So, the question is, will Tony repudiate the Catholic Church, the Pope and disavow the Church he loved so much? Has Coppola given up his Catholic faith? How could a devout Catholic attack another Catholic on the teachings and beliefs he also holds? Or was he faking his indignity for political gain?
This smacks of a very disingenuous person who is willing to turn his back on the Church for his 7 pieces of silver, which has apparently inflated to $1,500.00 twice a month. The current price of his soul.
Condi at commencement …
It has recently been announced that Condoleezza Rice will be speaking at this year’s commencement ceremony and receiving an honorary degree from Boston College. Although there are some individuals on campus who support this decision, there is a growing movement among students, faculty, staff, alumni, and parents who are opposed to the BC administration’s invitation to Rice and are insulted by the extension of an honorary degree to a secretary of state who supports morally-reprehensible policies both in the United States and abroad. The BC administration’s decision to award the secretary of state with an honorary degree morally condones these unjust policies at best, and at worst endorses them. Consequently, we have come forward to voice our particular concerns as they relate to this problematic decision in an effort to raise awareness and initiate dialogue about an appropriate response. On multiple occasions, the BC administration has cancelled events, claiming that they ran contrary to Catholic and Jesuit values. As a Catholic, Jesuit university, we have the moral imperative to uphold the ideals of peace and social justice. Yet despite the Vatican’s vehement condemnation of the Iraq war, BC is honoring one of its chief architects. This is an example of how the BC administration has clearly been inconsistent in its invocation of Catholic values.
While we are not in favor of censorship on the basis of Jesuit ideals, we feel that the gift of an honorary degree extends beyond the limits or invocation of free speech and into the realm of acclamation and endorsement by BC. A commencement speaker in particular is meant to embody the spirit of our University in order to commemorate its graduates’ final experience as BC students. We do not believe Rice fulfills this role, and we ask the University to rescind its invitation to Rice and the offered honorary degree. Eight hundred-plus members of the BC community have signed on to our petition, and it’s continuing to grow.
Tony Coppola, A&S ’06
And if you still want more proof of the vile beliefs of Tony Coppola such as his classy debate at BC saying things like “All through the evening Gephardt/Coppola seized every chance to call President Bush “a miserable failure” read this story.
Tony, I hope you attend confession every day. The lies flowing out of your keyboard are absolutely shameful. Shame on you for attacking you own religion. Is there such a thing as religious cannibalism? I believe you qualify.
I think Bob McDonnell and Dr. O’Bannon would be glad to say a prayer for you.
Michael Gage is the Republican Candidate for the 74th District House of Delegates seat that plans to retire Democrat Joe Morrissey. After attending a Town Hall meeting last month, it was clear that Michael Gage has a deep understanding of the issues and problems in the 74th District and has the knowledge and skills to address those problems legislatively. If you have not yet read the summary of the Town Hall meeting, you may read it here.
This past Sunday afternoon, Michael and Karen Gage opened their home for a gathering of friends, neighbors and supporters. My mouth had been watering for days as Michael taunted his Facebook friends with the preparation details of the feast. He treated guests to smoked beef, chicken, ribs, sausage as well as Hot Dogs and Hamburgers. The weather was perfect for an evening in the shade of the trees in the yard. Michael did a lot of work, and at the risk of sounding like Chef Gordon Ramsay, it was “spot on”. And the only “F” word involved was food. And lots of it.
While Michael’s wife (and top supporter), the hard working Karen Gage, kept the culinary wonders in order, Michael circulated among the crowd and listened and talked to his guests. There seemed to be as many Democrats as Republicans and it was an interesting and very friendly gathering. Michael Gage has an uncanny ability transcend party politics and deal just with the issues.
Karen Gage
And he’s always thinking. He is looking at ways the New Kent farmers can sell soy products to Hopewell Bio-Diesel facilities, which provides income, jobs, clean fuel and keeps it all in the 74th district. This is an innovative man with a keen head for business. His opponent, Joe Morrissey, a lawyer, seems to have a keen head for dealing with issues outside of the district and trying to decriminalize crime. It’s been a while since the 74th District has had a Delegate that will work for them!
It was a wonderful afternoon of food and conversation. And nobody needed any Rolaids!
A just released Rasmussen Poll taken shortly after the thesis story in the Washington Post shows epublican candidate for Governor Bob McDonnell with a small gain over the last Rasmussen poll. This poll shows McDonnell leading Democrat Creigh Deeds 51%-42%, up slightly (and insignificantly) over the last Rasmussen poll which showed McDonnell leading 49%-41%.
McDonnell currently receives support from 91% of Republicans. That’s up from 85% a month ago. Deeds earns the vote from 84% of Democrats, up from 80%. Voters not affiliated with either major political party still favor McDonnell by a significant margin
This poll shows about the same results as a PPP poll released yesterday, but Rasmussen is historically one of the most accurate in the business, and many question the PPP numbers. These numbers are in line with what the McDonnell has been saying. It’s single digits. But the theory by PPP that the Thesis story is having an impact on the race seems to be disproved by this survey. The respondents were asked questions about the thesis, it’s impact and importance, etc. And the numbers show little movement from the last (pre-thesis) poll.
Please visit Rasmussen for the details on this poll.
Former Alaskan Governor and last year’s Republican candidate for Vice President,Sarah Palin, is not slipping quietly away as some would have hoped.
This week Palin will consider accepting and rejecting well over the 1,000 invitations she has received for speeches and political appearances both paid and unpaid since she left office in July this year. In fact it was reported in the Atlantic this morning; Palin will be traveling to Hong Kong for her first paid speaking engagement in late September.
More than twenty speakers’ bureaux have been reported as making offers to represent her but the former Governor has decided to sign with the Washington Speakers Bureau which has clients such as former President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush, America’s Mayor, Rudy Giuliani who is on course to be the next Governor of New York, former Chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Secretary of State Colin Powell, former British PM Tony Blair, formers Secretaries of State Condi Rice and Madeline Albright and high profile journalists Katie Couric and Bob Woodward to name but a few. The irony being represented by the same firm as Couric should not be lost given the Couric/Palin interview is still being dissected – not one of Palin’s greater moments during the Presidential campaign.
Palin has received more than 950 requests to speak with the paid ones expected to go for six figures a piece. Unpaid speeches will be for various political and charitable causes, including military families, Christian organizations and support groups for families with special needs children. She is uniquely qualified to speak on these matters given her familial circumstances with a young son serving in the military and her youngest born with Down syndrome in just the past year or so. She has strong and firm Christian beliefs which went a long way to solidifying the political and cultural base of the GOP during her candidacy last year.

In a shocking move that is sure to upset Christians in Bath Count and throughout Virginia, Democrat candidate Creigh Deeds has leveled attacks at Republican Bob McDonnell for his Catholic beliefs. Contraception is condemned in the Bible. The Catholic Church stands firmly against it’s use. In case you wish to see a list of scriptures that support this, visit this website.
Is it fair, in the heat of a campaign, to attack the religious beliefs of a candidate? Has Creigh Deeds fallen so hopelessly behind that his campaign and Governor Tim Kaine’s DNC machine feel that one’s faith is fair game?
This country was founded on religious tolerance. We are brought up to respect each other’s faith and beliefs.
Are the campaigns now going to dig into Sunday School writings of Deeds? Is this relevant to Virginia when we are in the depths of the longest recession since the Great Depression? And what is the matter with the Washington Post? This is a new low even for them.
Over the last couple of decades since the thesis was written, attitudes in the Catholic Church have changed, even if the Vatican has not. Some estimates say as many as 96% of Catholics have used some form of birth control.
Whatever Bob McDonnell’s beliefs are concerning contraception at this time, I am sure I don’t have a clue, or a concern. Regardless of how you feel on the subject, I really don’t see condoms and “the pill” being made illegal by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Does anyone even believe that is something Bob McDonnell could do if he wanted to? Just how much power does the DNC and Deeds think the office of Governor has in the Commonwealth?
This is a totally bogus smoke screen designed to take the focus off of Deed’s lack of relevance in this race. Nothing more.
When the VEA endorses a Democrat, it’s like having a hot and humid day in Virginia in August. Not news.
When the VEA endorses a Republican, it is like snow in August in Virginia.
When the VEA endorses a Republican over an incumbent Democrat, well, there is nothing that compares with that. And the fact that the VEA also sent a check speaks volumes.
Jason Call, Republican candidate for the 90th District House of Delegates seat is obviously doing something right. To sway an organization like the VEA to endorse a Republican is a major tribute to the campaign Jason Call is running. It is also an encouraging sign that the VEA is actually looking at all candidates and, at least in my book, increases the weight of a VEA endorsement.
For those that do not know, Mr. Call has also pledged to only remain in for two terms (if elected). He is not your “politics as usual” candidate.

For Immediate Release – Republican Jason E. Call receives endorsement from Virginia Education Association.
Candidate Call, a navy veteran, CPA and small business owner, has made education a hallmark of his campaign for the 90th district, serving Norfolk, Chesapeake, and Virginia Beach.
The rarity of the VEA endorsing a Republican challenger against an entrenched Democrat incumbent shows the depth of Jason’s commitment to our future generations.
His Investment in Education initiative emphasizes recruiting and retaining the best teachers, innovative reforms, and full funding of education programs. Youth programs also rank high on the agenda.
According to Call, “We need to reengage our youth in the American Dream to combat drugs, gangs, and teen pregnancy. We need to emphasize education, not incarceration. We need to offer games, not gangs.”

Dottie and I have been busy attending a variety of events throughout Hanover this summer and looking forward to the fall campaign. Please let me know if you have any suggestions and/or thoughts going forward to help with our campaign, John
I was unable to find time to watch the Times Dispatch online interview with Democratic candidate for Governor Creigh Deeds until today. It was an interesting interview that I believe showed an ill prepared Deeds stumbling through most of the difficult questions. Deeds seemed to stutter a lot on questions that put him on the spot, which were almost all of them.
Many of the Blue Blogs have demonized Republican candidate for Governor Bob McDonnell for his position on the Marriage Act, which defines marriage in the Commonwealth as between a man and a woman. McDonnell has been called homophobic, anti-gay, and has even been accused of discrimination against gays because of his views. So I must assume the Gay community and their supporters would feel the same about Deeds, despite the (D) after his name. To do otherwise would be hypocritical, right?
Deeds stuttered quite a bit when asked about “Card Check” and other anti-worker laws favoring Unions. Deeds copped out and refused to answer, saying that would never cross his desk.
He also stammered through his lack of a Transportation plan, incorrectly accusing McDonnell of taking money from education for roads. He used the word “essentially taking money” to indicate he was aware that he was not being truthful. I just wonder if Deeds realizes that without roads, it will be pretty hard to get to our schools.
The one place he did not stutter or stammer was when he said he would raise taxes to pay for roads. Pretty much any taxes.
Deeds squirmed like a schoolboy in need of a bathroom when asked about Obama. He pointed out there were areas where he disagreed with Obama, but failed to mention any. One can only assume his disagreement was with Obama’s plummeting poll numbers.
McDonnell came out with a comprehensive Transportation plan that included no tax increases to pay for Virginia roads. Deeds says he will wait a year or so and get some people together to look at what to do about transportation after he is elected. Good plan!
The Deeds campaign said the Democrat is not necessarily opposed to privatizing ABC, saying it could be a piece of the puzzle to raise revenue. “It’s an option that should be on the table,” Deeds campaign spokesman Jared Leopold said.
It gets a little hard to following the ever changing position of Creigh Deeds. At the end of the interview, Deeds said he wants to carry on the “pragmatic” leadership of Mark Warner and Tim Kaine. By definition, pragmatism is “a practical, matter-of-fact way of approaching or assessing situations or of solving problems”. I suppose what Deeds means is that the Warner – Kaine $6.5 billion budget shortfall is easily solved by Jody Wagner’s overly optimistic and pragmatic projections of growth. We all see where that got us. I think a realistic approach using true and realistic projections is what we need. Not more budgetary hocus-pocus.
We would have to call Mr. Deeds the “anti-gay, pro-tax, me too, hocus-pocus pragmatist” candidate without a plan.
Democratic Candidate Creigh Deeds is at it again. He is unable to find any issues on which to trump Republican candidate Bob McDonnell, so he is going back to the failed $125 million unemployment offer from Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama.
What Deeds does not want you to know is that this $125 million offer comes on the condition that Pelosi and Obama get to rewrite Virginia unemployment laws. That’s right. These Socialists will get to write Virginia’s laws.
Here’s the deal. If we accept the money, which, by the way, will only last about 5 weeks, we will be required to extend unemployment benefits from 26 weeks to 59 weeks, recipients will see only a couple of bucks a week in extra cash, and for the first time, we will be required to extend unemployment to part time workers.
Bob McDonnell and the Republicans are not against extra benefits for unemployed workers, but the strings attached to this are worse than any loan shark on the streets. We are in a budget crunch. Governor Kaine has seriously mismanaged the State’s budget and continued to spend, spend, spend. Now, instead of a few minor adjustments, we are forced to close rest areas, lay off VDOT and other workers and still have a severe budget shortfall.
At last count, 30 states have run out of funds for unemployment an are now forced to borrow money – from Pelosi and Obama. These states all took the $125 million poison pill Virginia turned down. What are the terms of borrowing money from these Socialists? You guessed it. They get to write even more laws.
This money would necessitate increasing unemployment taxes on businesses at a time that many are struggling to keep their heads above water. It will create more unemployment as small businesses go under, or lay off workers to pay the additional taxes.
It is ideas like this that are the reason Creigh Deeds is so far behind in the polls. Instead of trying to make this a political issue, perhaps he should ask Pelosi and Obama to take the strings away and let us write our own laws. Then we will able to afford to take the extra money, and not until.
