After a couple of weeks of fighting the fact that several of the ranking sites have either been down or made changes to their site that I had to rewrite my data harvesting routines, everything is finally back on track. Last week, Compete made several changes and I was able to fix it, so the standings for last week verses this week are correct.
With the elections out of the way, I should have more time to concentrate on producing these standings on a weekly basis.

It has become quite common that one or more of the ranking sites decided to either go down completely or have major issues just when my software kicks off on Sunday mornings to gather the rankings for the (now) 51 Virginia blogs I track each week. And even when the sites all cooperate, it seems that one or more has decided to make a change to their web page where the rankings are posted.
Which means that it is a constant battle.
In order to allow for an occasional outage of a site, I have added added Quantcast to the … Read the rest

The Blog Rankings are out for 9/25/2011! While I have managed to gather the data the past couple of weeks, a number of obstacles have managed to make things a bit more difficult.
As soon as we got our lights back on from the hurricane, it seems that it has been one thing after another. I moved my business to a new location and did much of the work myself, with my family. So my time has been monopolized by that.
And if that were not enough, it saems that several of the ranking engines have made changes, had outages, … Read the rest

Finally back in the swing of things with the blog rankings. The week of 8/28/2011 was a wipe-out due to Hurricane Irene and the week of 9/4/2011 was the Labor Day weekend and I was busy moving my business office from one location to another about 3 blocks away. We had been in the same shopping center for 9 years, and it was time for a move. I did make the effort to compile the rankings last weekend, but one of the ranking engines (Compete) made major changes and I had to rewrite the software I use to grab the … Read the rest

There seems to have been an algorithm tweak at Compete.com this week. Several rankings were pulled downwards by the change, but there was not a lot of downward movement due to their change. There was some upward movement in several blogs that were previously not ranked, which have now been added to the Compete rankings.
VB Dems was one such blog added to Compete this week. As a result, they jumped 651% and rose from #38 to #16 making them the Most Improved Political Blog of the week.

The Virginia Political Blog Rankings for 8/14/2011 are out!
Several blogs (finally) took our advice and registered for Technorati and moved up quite a bit in the rankings as a result.
This week’s Most Improved Virginia Political Blog Award goes to The Green Miles which rose 432% compared to the previous week and this translated to an upward move of 24 slots from #45 to #21. Green Miles was also one of three Blogs who were unlisted on Technorati last week and took the time to get listed (which is FREE and the information is available by clicking the BlogRank … Read the rest

The rankings have been trimmed down to only the top 50 most active blogs. If you are the owner of a blog that has been removed from the top 50, please let me know if you return to actively blogging. While there is no hard and fast rule (yet) on what constitutes an active blog, certainly more than one per month is in order. When I began to weed out inactive blogs, I used a 90 day guideline to declare a blog inactive. What I have found is that there were … Read the rest

The Virginia Political Blog Rankings for 7/24/2011 are out!
We thinned out some of the less active blogs and brought the total number of ranked blogs to 50. There were a number of blogs that have new posts only rarely and there was not much point in ranking them on a weekly basis.
Most of the rankings remained fairly steady, but there were one or two who fell in the Technorati rankings to not being listed, so they had a significant decline in these rankings as a result.
Also, as more data has been collected, the “penalty” for not being … Read the rest

The rankings remained stable this week in the top 20 positions with no changes at all until position 18. There were also no new blogs who took the advice in the FAQ to list their sites in all of the ranking engines – in particular Technorati.

Apologies for the tardiness of this week’s rankings. The “snapshot” was taken on Sunday as usual, but I was out of state for the 4th of July Holiday and was unable to find the time to post.
But there are some significant changed in the rankings!
It looks like a few of the blogs followed the advice in the FAQ document and listed their blogs in the various ranking engines. And it paid off. Last week, 41 blogs were not listed in Technorati and that number is now down to 37 … Read the rest

As most of you know, I have been compiling a weekly ranking of the political blogs in Virginia since the first of the year. But I began doing research to try to come up with a fair and accurate way of doing a ranking several months before I began doing the rankings. One of the first thoughts I had on the project was to use a free service called Sitemeter that several blogs already use, and the thought was that I could persuade those that don’t already use Sitemeter to do so. But when I looked into the free version … Read the rest
