Video Flashback: 1973 – Shambala by Three Dog Night

Where were you in 1973 when Three Dog Night launched a Number 3 Hit with Shambala?

I was attending Virginia Commonwealth University, letting my hair grow and following the road to fame and fortune with an old electric guitar and an old 2 piece Silvertone amp. Sometime that year I gave away the guitar and purchased a 1971 Gibson Les Paul Gold Top and a Yamaha amp. The kid I gave the guitar to wanted to learn to play. I gave him the guitar, a few lessons and have no idea if he stuck with it. Colby was his name. Or perhaps Cody. He lived in the neighborhood and came by to listen to us practice all the time.

He would be the first of several kids to which I gave guitars. The Les Paul is still in my possession and is earmarked for my son some day. I also still have the amp, but compared to my Line 6 Spider, it is really a dud!

After graduating from High School in 1972, my first full year of “freedom” was 1973, so this was a bit of a banner year for me.

Anyone else remember this song?

  1. Kevin says:

I was 12…riding around on my schwinn with the banana seat, a transistor radio hanging from the handle bars blasting out AM rock with my best friend Steve. He had just gotten one of those weird looking newfangled ten speed bikes, and we tore up and down the streets of Gardner, Mass. We were both madly in love with Kathy Faust.
If I remember correctly, at the time we were in a very unpopular war, the economy was crappy, no one really liked the president and racial tensions were pretty bad…..some things never change.
