There is an amazing news story, found here in the Milwaukee paper, about an art auction:
A vibrant, multihued painting from Pablo Picasso set a world record for artwork at auction, selling for $179.4 million on Monday night, and a sculpture by Alberto Giacometti set a record for most expensive sculpture, at $141.3 million.
Picasso’s “Women of Algiers (Version O)” and Giacometti’s life-size “Pointing Man” were among dozens of masterpieces from the 20th century Christie’s offered in a curated sale titled “Looking Forward to the Past.”
The Picasso price, $179,365,000, and the Giacometti price, $141,285,000, included the auction house’s premium. The buyers elected to remain anonymous.
I am going to rant here a bit. (Yes I know John Bolton is not running for President. I am truly sorry but I expected it to happen. Let’s hope Bolton does not endorse Sen. Lindsey Graham!) This is terrible. People are dying in places like Nepal. More are dying without Jesus Christ as Saviour – and stepping into an eternity without the love of God. (If you want to know more about that, go here!) And people want to spend nearly 180 million dollars for a painting? Just over 140 million for a sculpture?
People can do whatever they want: I am a libertarian Christian. But I would exhort better spending of this kind of money that would do more good for people. Now rant done.
