Announcement From Sanders the Sometimes Blogger at VR!

DO NOT WATCH OLYMPICS LIVE!

I have come to a painful decision: I will not watch the Olympic coverage live on NBC or any affiliate. It is painfully obvious and unjust that the Games have been allowed to remain in PRC. Since TV ratings are the coin of the realm join me in standing for the Uyghurs and Peng Shuai.

Watch out, Readers! I am about to cite BOTH the Washington Post and NY Times in the same blog post! (No I am not going soft or becoming a globalist but some might not agree after they read the next blog post today!)

The Post states that genocide is going on in PRC:

It’s one thing to stay silent about mass atrocities. It’s quite another thing to actively help the oppressors whitewash their crimes. The Winter Olympics beginning next month in China, where the government is committing a genocide against Uyghur Muslims, is turning all of its partners into atrocity deniers before our eyes.

The Times states that the IOC is wary of finding out too much about the use of slave labor for Olympic items.

The activists’ request was straightforward: They wanted to share their concerns about human rights in China, in particular the possibility that official merchandise for the Beijing Olympics was being made with forced labor, and to hear what the International Olympic Committee was doing to ensure it was not.

For months, they pressed Olympics officials for a conversation. The I.O.C., the body that oversees the Games, sidestepped at first. Eventually, officials from the committee agreed to meet — but only for an “active listening exercise,” not to share any information. And the talk would have to remain secret.

Finally, late last month, the I.O.C. pulled out entirely from meeting with the activist group, the Coalition to End Forced Labor in the Uyghur Region.

Now it is a bit like a total or annular solar eclipse in USA for me to agree with both the Post and the Times but strange things can happen. Foreign Policy, a magazine I usually also disagree with, says something very similar:

Relocate the Olympics or Condone Genocide

There is also the unfortunate incident involving the tennis player Peng Shuai. She may still be missing. Here is an article from a week ago, again from the Times.

The Chinese tennis star Peng Shuai disappeared from public view for weeks after she accused a top Chinese leader of sexual assault.

This should have been reason enough for the Olympics to be pulled out of China. Athletes must be safe and secure in their home country.

Now I fully realize that this post may cost me that missions trip to China some day. But I’d rather go to the Republic of China (Yes, Taiwan) anyway.

Now I AM NOT abandoning the Sanders Olympic Policy. If a nation wins their first medal or their first gold medal at these so-called games I will honor them at this blog. And I reserve the right to watch tape delay or YouTube showings later if something astounding happens. But no live Olympics for me.
