The Hanover Republican Committee held their June meeting at the brand new Mechanicsville Library on Saturday June 20, 2009. This is a very impressive library and a great complement to the meeting room at the Bass Pro Shops where the evening meetings are held.
Hanover’s own and Virginia’s Lt. Governor Bill Bolling took time out from his hectic schedule to update the committee on the McDonnell – Bolling – Cuccinelli campaign. Bolling discussed the budget shortfalls in the Tim Kaine budget and some of the “magic money” and gimmicks used to balance the budget including a prediction of 4.5% growth at a time when the economy is shrinking. Bolling predicts a massive problem with Virginia finances when the true fiscal irresponsibility by Democrat Kaine is tallied. Bollings message was positive and upbeat as to the Republican potential in November and encouraged the members to pitch in to return Virginia to a red state where it truly belongs.
Bolling mentioned that while he was trying to recruit the Hilton Hotel Headquarters to relocate in business friendly Virginia, Democratic candidate for Governor Creigh Deeds and his Lt. Governor candidate Jody Wagner were busy picketing Hilton in support of their big money union friends. It is clear that this is an anti-jobs Democratic ticket that will continue the irresponsible fiscal policies of Tim Kaine.
Before moving on to his next appearance in Tappahannock, Va, Bolling had some words of praise for John Cox, winner of the Republican Primary for the 55th House of Delegates seat. Bolling said he remembered when his long time and dear friend John Cox came to him for his opinion on the possibility of Cox running for the seat of
retiring Delegate Frank Hargrove, Sr. Bolling said that when Cox finished his “sales pitch”, he said that was all well and good, but why would you want to put yourself in this arena? Bolling went on to speak of the great success Cox has had as a businessman and wanted to understand why, at this point in his life, when he has the means and ability to kick back and relax, John Cox would want to add on the responsibility of being a Virginia Delegate. Bolling said Cox gave him the right answer. John Cox said Virginia and Hanover had been so good to him he wanted to give back to the county and state that had done right by him. Bolling immediately threw his full support behind Cox.
John Cox addressed the committee with some very kind words about his primary opponents Jerry Burch and Rusty McGuire. He recognized the wives behind the candidates and the huge roll they all played in the campaign for the amount of work they had done behind the scenes as the unsung heroes they are.
Cox went on to say he has heard a number of people say that he is running to “replace” Frank Hargrove, Sr. He made it clear that he does not consider his bid for Delegate as replacing Hargrove, as that would be impossible. He just hopes to succeed him and continue the tradition of excellence Delegate Hargrove established in his 28 years in the Virginia House of Delegates.
Cox asked that the Hanover Republican Committee stand with him and help him retain the 55th district seat in November. He spoke of his opponent, Democrat Robert Barnette, by saying he does not know Barnette, but hears he is a good and honorable man and looks forward to the campaign.
After the meeting, numerous members congratulated Cox and offered support to make sure the Republicans and John Cox are victorious on November 3, 2009.
