California public union OKs strike authorization

According to a Reuters Report, the Service Employees International Union Local 1000, California’s largest state employees’ union voted on Saturday to approve a strike authorization measure to protest furloughs of state workers and pressure state officials to ratify its labor contract.

Employees are furloughed 3 days a month with a corresponding 15% cut in pay. While this does not necessarily mean a strike is imminent, it opens the door to such action.

With the budget mess California is in due to a bloated state government and massive welfare payouts, these workers should be glad to have jobs at all. The recession has made everyone make hard decisions. With the unemployment rate in double digits, it is hard to find much sympathy for a 15% cut, with 3 days off a month.

Should they go on strike, the State should simply eliminate the jobs. Talk about greedy, ask the 12% of Californians currently unemployed if they would like one of those jobs. Unions need to dispense with the greed and get with the program. But then, they are used to being a part of the problem.
