CAN’T MAKE THIS UP: RAND PAUL will ANNOUNCE for PRESIDENT at the GALT HOTEL in LOUISVILLE! SERIOUSLY, I am IMPRESSED with the UNITED FOR RAND PAC…

I just could not resist the ironic humor of Senator Rand Paul announcing for President at the GALT Hotel (It’s actually the Galt House Hotel and it looks like the kind of place I plan to take Nina for our 25th Anniversary in 2018 Lord willing!) in Lousiville, Kentucky.  Might give “Going Galt” a new meaning.  (Of course he may have to put it off a few days due to the mandatory days of mourning required for the upset loss of the UK Wildcats to Wisconsin [Hey, Scott Walker is the Governor of the Badger State – is sports a precursor of politics?] last night in the first round of the Final Four.)

But in all seriousness, I was and am impressed with the United for Rand PAC and what I read there.  Here’s the UFR website.  See for yourself.  Here’s a few highlights from the UFR site:

UFR’s goal is to build connections and relationships centered on core shared values despite our cultural differences. We seek to train and develop leaders on political, social, and economic policy solutions, increase civic engagement and build strong communities united for real social change.

Sounds like a progressive PAC, doesn’t it?  Look at these ideas:  Voting rights for felons (I agree that after a certain number of clean years a felon should be allowed to vote automatically), a number of “criminal justice” reforms (it’s useful to come out for medical pot and industrial hemp and I agree with both) but try this if you like a bit of hot sauce with your politics:

War on drugs has unintentionally had a racial outcome. (Jun 2014)

***

  • 8% of African American population cannot vote due to non-violent felonies

  • 44 percent of those imprisoned for drugs were black

But this is combined with free markets, repeal of Obamacare and cutting spending and taxes.  UFR has an intriguing and potentially visionary take on school choice as a way to get poor minority kids out of the inner cities:

A great education needs to be available for everyone, whether you live on Country Club Lane or in government housing. This will only happen when we allow school choice for everyone, rich or poor, white, brown, or black. Let the taxes you pay for education follow each child.

Well done.  I also noticed no social issues at all nor any of former Cong. Ron Paul’s foreign policy issues other than a video embedded about the filibuster to draw attention to the issue of drone killing of US citizens by the President with no oversight.  (That video and a quote from Van Jones has mysteriously disappeared from the United for Rand site.)

Now I bled for Ron Paul in 2008 and ’12 as all my readers know.  And I still consider myself a non-interventionist in general.  (My other hero, former UN Ambassador John Bolton called for war with Iran the other day just to show how conflicted I am on this issue.  From Ron Paul to Bolton is some move politically!)  But I can agree that US weakness in the world is not desirable.  But the billy club is only to be used in the clearest national interest.

But obviously Rand is not playing that card here.  This may be shrewd.  UFR is also reaching out to college students, a place where his father played well in ’08 and ’12 and not usually a fertile ground for GOP hopefuls.  I also know right here in the River City, there is a Rand Paul Group – they meet next on April 14 from 630 to 830 at Olive Garden on Broad Street (I do not need much excuse to go to OG!) led by Russ Wright.  I think I know Russ so I might try to make it – I need little excuse to go to OG!

I also am impressed with the Executive Director of the UFR, Anita MonCrief (who went to Alabama!) who learned her politics from ACORN and the Alinsky way of organizing until she blew the whistle on ACORN:

In 2008 MonCrief came forward as the confidential source of the New York Times and then publicly to expose the damage that ACORN has done to the impoverished and marginalized communities, as well as its rampant voter fraud, and gained notoriety as the ACORN whistle blower. In June 2009, Project Vote/ACORN filed a lawsuit in an attempt to silence her. But Anita has appeared on numerous radio and television programs including The O’Reilly Factor, The Laura Ingraham Show, The Sean Hannity Radio show and Fox News programs.

The ACORN/Project Vote lawsuit was dismissed in 2010.

I would like to see if MonCrief would come to Richmond and speak to the Richmond Crusade for Voters, a group I am a member of and involved with.  You can only ask, right?

I think Rand Paul will shake up the GOP race in a good way.  it will make for an exciting year for a political activist and blogger.  Both parties have to nominate new candidates and the races are wide open – yes even the Dems have a somewhat wide open primary now that Hillary was wounded by the email scandal – and could be a surprise.  Ask the UK Wildcats about that national championship they won this year…

Rand Paul passes easily one of the most important tests, that being the one of Integrity. No credible evidence exists that would harm his candidacy . He is who he is, no one owns him.

The non -interventionist carries both liabilities and benefits. The exposing of the defense industries clout , exhibited by an almost perpetual state of war since the end of WWII clearly shows war is a profitable business for quite a few American and International companies who make billions by maintaining this perpetual state of war. Eisenhower tried desperately to warn us of this, and we ignored his warnings until the defense industry became the gorilla it is. Yet another example of trying to put the genie back into the bottle.

Now that their is a clear example of the folly of attempting to export democracy to nations engaged for centuries in what is by almost any definition tribal warfare we should not see another Iraq take place. Foreign policy however will be ( and should be ) front and center in this Presidential election. If we have learned anything the last 6 years it is the danger of having these policy decisions in the hands of a man who is either naïve , or so unwilling to listen to anyone outside of his bubble, and the ensuing results.

The ease of access to dangerous weapons, the clear zealot and maniacal ends these enemies will go to,to do harm to America makes it imperative we have a President who sends an equally clear message to our enemies—strike at us at your own peril. Nations where these people operate from , nations that harbor these elements must know in no uncertain terms America will exercise it’s might when our interests are threatened. It is far more dangerous to leave doubt in their minds about our will to fight than anything else we might do. Bin Laden said as much in his lifetime, that America had lost it’s will to fight after Vietnam. It was just that intransigence and ambiguity that lead these zealots to believe they could attack us with impunity. American Foreign policy must be crystal clear, particularly in these dangerous times.

This is the challenge for Rand Paul, because this election will have foreign policy at the forefront of voters minds after 6 years of relentless push by these enemies and their emboldened aggression brought about by a weak national leader. Paul must convince voters of his willingness to use American might when it is needed. If he does that his fiscal conservatism and his strict adherence to the Constitution will serve him well and energize the base .
