Cox Campaign Mails Negative Ads Against Fellow Republicans in 55th House Race

Over the past few days, two mailers from the John Cox campaign have found their way into the mailboxes of 55th House District voters. While disagreement on the issues is expected and welcomed, these ads go way beyond the bounds of responsible campaigning. In these ads, several false and misleading claims are made against fellow Republican candidate Rusty McGuire.

I know John Cox to be an honorable man of integrity. What I find most baffling is that these ads came from the Cox campaign, as they are totally out of character for him. The only conclusion I can reach is that Cox is getting some bad advice from his advisers.

The candidates, McGuire and Cox have different backgrounds and bring different skills to the table. Both are highly qualified individuals and they do not need to resort to negative tactics. The leaders of the Hanover Republican Committee have wisely reminded the candidates that we are all Republicans and at the end of the campaign, we must all support each other and unify. Negative ads make this admirable goal much more difficult to realize.

At the opening of the McDonnell Victory headquarters a couple of weeks back, Hanover’s own Bill Bolling said that while it is fine to disagree, there will be no divisions. These ads are a road map to division and should be rejected.

I have no desire to specify the false and misleading claims in these ads other than to say I believe the citizens of the 55th district would be best served by all parties relying on their considerable qualities to win the election and let the voters decide on the best person to represent them. The temptation to denigrate your opponent is one that should be summarily rejected.

his is the reply I received when I requested my address be removed from Mr. Cox's mailing list:

    Tom

I will have you removed from the list.

Given your concerns about mailings, and the most recent McGuire attack
mailing to hit mailboxes, I will be passing your contact information
    to the Burch campaign.

Clearly a man of your principles and concise thought would not want to
    associated with Mr. McGuire either.

I thank you for your time and look forward to working with you to
    elect Republicans in November.
