CURLING is in the NEWS! VERNON DAVIS of the 49ers in an AVID CURLER! (AND YOU can curl here in Richmond at the ICEZONE on Saturday 2/4!)

I was crushed by the defeat of the Saints by the otherwise hated 49ers (as any Saints fan will tell you, the Saints and 49ers had a huge rivalry when the 49ers were hot and the Saints were getting better and were rivals for the division title!) but one bright spot:  Vernon Davis was the hero of the game.  Why?

Because Vernon Davis is the hero of another game:  Curling.  Yes curling.  That one with rocks and brooms.  That one.  He was an honorary captain of the USA men’s team and promotes the sport throughout the Bay Area:

By the way, this isn’t USA Curling’s first involvement with the NFL; San Francisco 49ers tight end Vernon Davis, you may remember, served as the honourary captain of the U.S. men’s curling team during the 2010 Olympics, and even made an appearance at the Vancouver Olympic Centre. Here’s a video with some background on Davis’s involvement.

And the 49ers have stuck with curling; the 49ers Foundation holds an annual fundraiser in Lake Tahoe every spring, and last year, two U.S. Olympic curlers conducted a learn-to-curl session during the fundraiser, and Niners coach Jim Harbaugh apparently enjoyed it so much that John Benton and Tracy Sachtjen have been invited back to do the same thing in March.

Fellow tight end Delanie Walker, linebacker Takeo Spikes, second-round draft pick Taylor Mays (USC) and linebacker Parys Haralson all came out to dine and mingle with a crowd of around 100 guests as the crowd gathered inside Stanley’s Sports Bar before heading down to the rink to partake in some curling fun. A portion of the proceeds from the event will benefit the Davis Family Foundation and the San Francisco Bay Area Curling Club.

Here’s a great funny video concerning Vernon Davis and curling!

You do not have to go to the Bay Area to curl:  Thanks to the Lord and the Curling Club of Virginia – curling is here in the River City:  Saturday February 4 at 815 at the IceZone in Chesterfield.  Come on out – cost is $20 per person (primarily for ice time and a few bucks for the CCV!) for the most fun on ice!  Your blogger curls and he is learning and loving it as he learns.  It’s exciting, a bit brainy and will get you a nice workout, too!  Sandy can be reached at this blog!
