Dean D. Davison is Running for Delegate in the 19th District!

Dean D. Davison is the Libertarian candidate for House of Delegates in district 19 (All of Covington, all of Alleghany and parts of Bedford and Botetourt Counties.  The incumbent is Delegate Terry Austin.

This district was for many years held by perhaps the last person tapped by the Harry Byrd Organization to political office:  Lacey Putney.  Putney was a very conservative Democrat who switched to independent and almost became Speaker in 1998 when the GOP was three votes away from a tie.  Three people were to be certified by their election but the Dems blocked it even though it was obvious the Republicans won their elections.  I recall Putney was named Acting Speaker between sessions sometime later.

Davison wants to continue the Putney tradition of independent service to the voters and the Commonwealth.  Yes, he is in the mainstream of libertarian thought.  He’s for industrial hemp, pro-life, medical marijuana, general privatizing of government services and a hawk on spending and taxes.

Dean is also a first responder:  A volunteer firefighter for the past 19 years in Bedford County.  He is also a safety training officer and was elected rescue lieutenant.  In his “day job”, he is a free-lance meteorologist.

Dean came to Virginia from New Jersey and was a former Democrat.  He gradually discovered he was a libertarian and while here in Virginia got involved.  Davison is the Vice President of the Roanoke Valley Libertarians and the Fifth Congressional District chair, which means he sits on the state central committee of the LP.

Davison is articulate and knows why he wants to run; Del. Austin did not have an opponent in 2017 or 2015.  Austin also voted for the Medicaid expansion and this has been reported to have riled the GOP activists.  While Dean says Austin is a “good man”, the Libertarian is concerned about the Medicaid expansion vote.  Dean is working on his petitions and expects to be nominated by the LP.  He plans to knock on doors, emphasize his interest in state issues and seeks to be that independent voice for the district.  Dean is interested in two of my issues:  Reform of domestic relations laws and a statewide public defender system.

I doubt a Democrat will run in this district; the district voted 71% for Trump and also 71% for Gillespie. However, there may be a bit of a libertarian streak – Rob Sarvis got 9% in this district in 2013 for Governor.  Dean is hoping for a strong showing in Bedford County.  I think Davison could be a solid candidate if he could get funding.  But most LP candidates struggle with fundraising.

Nothing is more conservative than a republican wanting to get their majority back. And nothing is more liberal than a republican WITH a majority.
