Delegate Chris Peace Submits Timely Bill for 2011 Session

Delegate Chris Peace

Delegate Chris Peace

Virginia Delegate Chris Peace (R-97th) has introduced a bill (HB-1465) that would change the Virginia Code to prohibit people in this country illegally from attending Virginia’s State owned universities. You know, the universities our tax dollars support?

The Commonwealth of Virginia allows citizens and properly documented visitors to attend state colleges and universities. There are restrictions on who qualifies as an “in state” student for purposes of determining if the person qualifies for a more heavily discounted, taxpayer subsidized tuition rate (Code of Va 23-7.4), which is not in question, as all states do the same thing. Others, who are not Virginia Residents must pay the “out of state” tuition rates, which are a good bit higher.

So, when Delegate Peace proposes adding one line to the Code of Virginia:

(ii) an alien who is unlawfully present in the United States shall not be eligible for admission to any public institution of higher education in Virginia;

which simply prohibits anyone who is not legally in this country from attending our schools, how could anyone get their knickers in a bunch over that?

Well, apparently, my esteemed blogger colleague at “I’m Surrounded By Idiots” not only takes issue with Delegate Peace’ legislation, he goes so far as to say Delegate Chris Peace is an embarrasment to Caroline County and Virginia.(sic)

And before you write to tell me the title of the post at I’m Surrounded misspelled the word embarrassment (there are two S’s) in the title of the article, that is not the only thing I find embarrassing about his post.

The overall assumption that Chris Peace, or this legislation, is somehow anti-Hispanic is absurd. The piece of logic missing from this missive at I’m Surrounded is the fact that even out of state tuition rates are subsidized. Just less so.

So, exactly how much does it cost to attend a State School, say University of Virginia?

According to the UVA Website, In state students pay $10,836 and out of state students pay $33,782. The current undergraduate enrollment is 14,297 and an additional 6,598 Grad Students brings the total enrollment to 20,895.

The operating budget for the current year at UVA is $2,400,000,000 ($2.4 BILLION).

So, what does that work out per student, you wonder? $114,860 per year.

Of course, not all of that money comes from the state, but the school shells out $114,860 on each student. So, a student in the country illegally who pays the out of state tuition rate still receives $81,078 in subsidies, some of which is taxpayer money, all of which is American dollars.

And the assertion that it is somehow an expensive and onerous demand to establish the legal status of the students is absolutely laughable. They already know. According to the UVA website: Students come from 48 states and 120 foreign countries.

And the complete statistical breakdown by race, sex, ethnic group and almost any way you can think of to classify human beings is on the same web page. Adding one more qualifier: Are you presently here illegally? is hardly worthy of a footnote in a $2.4 Billion budget.

While Timothy Watson at I’m Surrounded seems to believe this is somehow an anti-Hispanic bit of Legislation, when you break down the numbers, as Delegate Peace obviously has, you see it is more about salvaging an opportunity for an education for Virginians, Americans and those who follow the rules to come to this country legally.

This legislation is only necessary because there are those in Washington that would have Virginia further subsidize tuition for illegal aliens at the expense of the citizens of Virginia. We welcome those who abide by our laws, but we must not entice and reward scofflaws that sneak into this country and siphon off our precious resources: educational, medical or otherwise.

Most of us wish legislation like this was not necessary. States have been forced to create laws to fend off Federal Government’s attempts to subvert the Constitutional sovereignty of our states. Unfortunately, many in the current administration in D.C. believe our Constitution is simply a suggestion, and a bad one at that.

Strangely, the proprietor of I’m Surrounded By Idiots takes issue with Delegate Peace for granting an interview with World Net Daily, saying about WND:

What is “World Net Daily”, you may be asking? Well, it is the clearing house of hundreds of different crazy conspiracy theories, including being one of the main sites responsible for the “Birthers” who allege, despite the voluminous evidence to the contrary, that President Barack Obama was not born in the United States. In all, it is a bunch of crazies that write a bunch of nonsensical drivel.

So, he seems to believe that WND deals with innuendo, rumor, and gossip.

On the “About” page for I’m Surrounded, it states that the blog is “The premier spot for news, innuendo, rumor, and gossip in Caroline County”.

Sort of the idiot version of World Net Daily of Caroline I suppose.

Thanks, but I think we’ll be keeping Chris Peace around as long as he’s willing to keep supporting us in the Statesman-like fashion we have enjoyed during his service. Speaking, of course, for the majority of us who surround ourselves with people who are not idiots.

Perhaps Mr. Watson just needs a new circle of friends.

Elementary, my dear Watson!

It’s a fine idea, but then so is enforcing existing laws. Perhaps more people would be on board with enforcing existing laws if they understood the need for them better. We should be careful not to appear xenophobic. Google “Arizona 1070 twists and turns.”

  2. GoneWithTheWind says:

The “one world’ers” and others who want illegal immigration will accuse you of xenophobia no matter how careful you are. Their goal is to break us and turn America into a resource. They will tax you into poverty to pay for all the illegals and once all your money and assets are gone YOU will be the minority but do not expect constitutional rights from the NEW majority. Much like with terrorism this is a fight for our country and our lives. Either you fight and win our you give up. There will be no inbetween.
