For Crying Out Loud People – Give Dave Brat a Chance, Will You?

The election is over. Dave Brat won. Eric Cantor will serve out the rest of his term and, in all likelihood, Dave Brat will win the 7th District – a district intentionally set up to keep Republican Eric Cantor safe from Democratic challengers.

For the past few months, Dave Brat has gone from college professor to candidate with almost no money.

He ran a positive campaign focused on Eric Cantor’s record, not Eric Cantor’s spin.

Brat was called a liberal because he is a college professor and he served on a bipartisan board that forecast state revenue and he did not advise any governor on tax policy. That wasn’t the scope of the job.

But what is really embarrassing is the number of people picking nits with anything and everything Brat says on the news.

Brat was asked about the Federal Minimum Wage and admitted he has not yet come out with a policy opinion on that. He has been ridiculed as a poor economist, as stupid and every other name in the book. It seems that people are so used to Eric Cantor’s smooth answers that say absolutely nothing and come down both for or against any given topic with wiggle room and caveats that make his position impossible to nail down. Sort of like Obama.

And one person even had the gall to say, after hearing Brat declare the victory the greatest day of his life, that he puts this above family and God. Really?

And one of Eric Cantor’s staffers calls Dave Brat a Xenophobe because he believes America should secure her borders and enforce existing laws. And embrace legal immigration. Or they use the “dog whistle” term Republicans have come to use as a covert way to call someone a racist – nativist.

Advocating legal immigration over illegal is not nativist. A nativist is against all immigration and if someone calls Dave Brat this offensive term, they are liars.

If you were looking for a slick politician who plays both sides of the fence, speaks from both sides of his mouth and is fluent in deception, Dave Brat will no doubt disappoint you. He is and will never be one of those people. It is just not in his DNA.

The question on National Minimum Wage was a “gotcha” question. Dave was smart enough to see that and until he has an intellectually honest answer, which I expect will be forthcoming, you will have to wait.

The problem is, if I know Dave’s thought process – and I think I do – is that from a free market economic perspective, raising the minimum wage is a zero sum game. And will make things worse, not better. To the average person, if everyone made $25 per hour, we could all afford to live in a nice place and have a decent standard of living. But to an intelligent person who has studied economics – let alone a Ph.D in the subject – that will not be the eventual outcome. The economy will adjust to the new reality. Economics will demand that the price of goods and services rise to cover the costs and jobs will be replaced by automation to accommodate the shift. And when the “invisible hand” is done, the $25 per hour will leave people worse off.

Go to a Wawa Store and order a sandwich. They use a computer terminal to take the order. At $25 per hour, every Burger King, McDonald’s, Wendy’s, KFC and Hardee’s will fire the people that take your order and install a machine. Airports will eliminate all of the ticket agents in favor of the kiosks that are already used more than live agents.

Grocery stores and home improvement stores already have self checkouts.

Do you hate the Automated Voice machines when you call some businesses? At $25 per hour, that is all you will get.

So how does Dave Brat articulate that to a reporter that is looking for a yes or no answer to supporting a minimum wage hike in a 2 minute interview?

He can’t. It doesn’t fit on a bumper sticker.

But you know what does fit on a bumper sticker? Dave Brat is against a minimum wage. Let the poor starve.

Now I don’t speak for Dave Brat and he has not offered his opinion to me on minimum wage. People need to understand that Dave Brat is an intellectual and has a far greater understanding of these things than a politician.

How might Cantor have answered that same question? Something like “I think the minimum wage has done a lot of good in America and I also believe we can do better. I have worked tirelessly to improve the lives and financial situation of all Americans and will continue to do so.”

Sadly, this was the answer the Eric Cantor supporters have grown to accept as a good answer. Yet the question remains as unanswered as it was when Brat was asked.

And the reporter will move on to the next question because Cantor took more time than they wanted not answering the question.

During the last 6 months or so no one has asked Dave Brat about what he would do on very many subjects. And he has correctly focused on the task at hand – winning the primary.

And Dave has a lot of work to do now on policy and exactly what he will do as a Congressman. He has focused on the primary. And he did what most thought impossible. He defeated a 14 year politician who was the majority leader of the US House. And he had 6 months to learn what he needed to know to accomplish that task. And he did that in an impressive win.

He has 7 months before he is sworn in to accomplish a task thousands have done before him – be sworn in as a Congressman. Yet none of these have knocked  off a majority leader. In 6 months Dave learned to do the impossible. He has an extra month to do something even Eric Cantor managed to do 14 years ago without a Ph.D.

I understand Dave and his family plan to sit back and enjoy Father’s Day weekend and take a well deserved rest. Laura Brat and their kids deserve that. And so does Dave.

And next week Dave will begin the journey to winning the seat in November. And I don’t think you will see a slick politician with the ability to talk out of both sides of his mouth emerge.

What you will see is an ordinary man determined to represent the views of the people of the 7th Congressional District of Virginia with honesty, ethics and prayer for a short time. And then he will return to his comfortable life he is leaving on our behalf and enjoy the rest of his life.

A citizen legislator.

What a novel concept.

So give the guy a break as he shifts from primary mode to general election mode. His grassroots will be there to push him over the top again in November. I will be there and all of my Dave Brat supporting friends will be there.

If you give Dave Brat a chance, he will impress you. I am not easily impressed by anyone. And Dave impressed me the first time we met.

And he continues to do so.

AMEN! Well stated Tom! Besides, according to the Republican Creed, we MUST support the Republican candidate! (Or get purged from the local GOP roster…) :o)

This is standard operating procedure by the progressive cancer in both parties. They cannot provide a logical rebuttal to his positions so they have to engage in character assassinations and name calling.

Nothing is more conservative than a republican wanting to get their majority back. And nothing is more liberal than a republican WITH a majority.
