Former Virginia Delegate Phil Hamilton (R-93) was indicted this week on federal bribery and extortion charges. The former Delegate made alleged attempts to secure a $40,000 per year job at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va. while working to secure grant money for the University from the State.
In a year that saw big gains in Republicans elected to the Virginia General Assembly, Hamilton proved the exception to the gains, losing the election to a Democrat.
Delegate Hamilton had a long and distinguished record of service in Virginia government and was a close friend and trusted colleague of many Virginia lawmakers – until the details of his Old Dominion University “ventures” surfaced during the election.
The Daily Press had this to say:
His attorney, Andrew Sacks of Norfolk, said in an e-mailed statement that Hamilton is innocent of all charges.
“No official from Old Dominion University paid any bribe to Phil and Phil received no bribe from any official at Old Dominion University,” Sacks said in the statement. “This simply did not happen, and we are confident that (ODU) denies this as well.”
