GOP Sets The Stage for Transparency

The newly elected Republican House Majority will not take over until January, but already we are getting a glimpse of what changes they have in mind. So far I like what I am seeing and it appears the republicans are going to be the ones to keep President Obama’s campaign promise of transparency.

Today, Rep. David Dreier (R-CA), the House Rules Committee Ranking Republican, sent request to House Chief Administrative Officer Dan Strodel, that work begin immediately on installing cameras in the Rules Committee hearing room. In the letter, he stated the following:

As you may be aware, the Committee on Rules is the only Committee — other than the Intelligence and Ethics committees — which does not have the ability to broadcast video of its proceedings in its main hearing room. Given the important nature of our work, my Republican Rules Committee colleagues and I have repeatedly requested that the Majority undertake the installation of cameras in the Rules Committee hearing room to the end that we begin web-casting our proceedings. Given the important business conducted there, we feel strongly that the American people should have the ability to watch the Committee in action.

The cameras in the Rules Committee is all part of The House GOP Congressional Transparency Initiative which also includes, posting the bills online at least 72 hours before they are brought up for a vote, ban phantom amendments and post member committee votes online within 48 hours. This was posted on the GOP Leader Blog:

House Republicans have been pressing for implementation of these the [transparency] resolution and other reforms, including a requirement that all bills be posted online for at least three days prior to being brought to a vote. Unfortunately, the current Democratic Majority has refused to implement these common-sense reforms.

So, wasn’t this what Obama had promised? Regardless, I’m glad to see that the republican leadership is taking their second chance seriously. We are watching.
