Virginia Republican Governor Bob McDonnell sent out an email today to his email distribution list.
For those not following the saga, McDonnell has accepted numerous financial benefits from a supporter that include payments for his daughter’s wedding, a Rolex watch, and cash. Lots of cash.
Of course the cash was said to be “loans” and then suddenly, all of the “loans” were repaid. Unfortunately, it looks as if these “loans” that go back to 2011 (at least) were paid back in one lump sum after the money became public. If there were any effort to pay back the loans in payments, that information was not provided.
No word on if the Rolex was returned.
Here is Bob McDonnell’s statement:
Governor McDonnell announced today that loans made to his wife and small family business by Star Scientific CEO Jonnie Williams have been repaid in full.
“Being Governor of Virginia is the highest honor of my 37 years in public service. I am deeply sorry for the embarrassment certain members of my family and I brought upon my beloved Virginia and her citizens. I want you to know that I broke no laws and that I am committed to regaining your sacred trust and confidence. I hope today’s action is another step toward that end. Virginia has never been stronger and I plan to focus on creating even more jobs and facilitating greater opportunity during the last five months of my term as your Governor. Our work together on education, transportation, pension reform, voting rights, and economic expansion has produced great results for Virginia,” said Governor McDonnell.
The repayments include $52,278.17 for a loan made to Mrs. McDonnell in 2011 and $71,837.00 for two additional loans made to the small real estate business owned jointly by the Governor and his sister in 2012. The payments include both principal and interest.
All monies used for repayment have come from the Governor, the family business itself, or his family.
And the email included instructions to “spread the word”:
A note from the Bob McDonnell Team:
Please forward this to your contact list and remind them that with this statement, the Governor
(1) has returned (with interest) the loans from Jonnie Williams;(2) has apologized for the situation; and,
(3) stands by the Troy Report issued last Friday that stated unequivocally that neither Jonnie Williams nor Star Scientific received any benefit.

So the investigation turned up no quid pro quo showing that McDonnell actually did anything for the cash and merchandise. So we are supposed to think the matter is all over, closed. Nothing to see here. Move along.
Sorry, Bob. Not quite.
The Republican Party in 2009, when you ran for Governor, proudly called themselves the party of Smaller Government, Lower Taxes and high ethics and morals.
Since 2009, Bob McDonnell personally pushed through the largest tax hike in the history of the Commonwealth, expanded ObamaCare (and grew government) and has been taking money and shiny things from supporters and “forgot” to disclose that on his required filings.
So each and every point that Republicans as a reason they were preferable to the Democrats has been wiped out in less than 4 years. And somehow, McDonnell believes that just because the former Attorney General of Virginia broke no laws, that is the end of it?
You are the worst of the worst kind of politician. You are just another “on the take” lifetime politician out to milk the system for everything you can for personal gain. You are good at dodging accountability and have enough friends in high places to allow you to get by with it.
As one who worked for your campaign in 2009, you let me down. At every turn.
So you won’t go to jail because you managed to convince “investigators” that you did nothing in return for the lavish gifts and cash.
You are an embarrassment to your party, an impediment to Republican success and a disgrace to Virginia.
The best thing you can do is resign and go the hell away. You will never regain the trust and confidence of the decent, hard working citizens of Virginia who deserve better than you.
