The small Caribbean nation of Grenada, liberated from a Communist coup by President Ronald Reagan in 1983, won their first Olympic medal in history today! James Kirani won GOLD in the 400 meter run! Here, for the benefit of NBC and my readers is the national anthem of Grenada! We’ll play it in this home with the flag in hand!
How can you not like these words:
Hail Grenada, land of ours
We pledge ourselves to thee
Heads, hearts and hands in unity
To reach our destiny
Ever conscious of God
Being proud of our heritage
May we with faith and courage
Aspire, build, advance
As one people, one family
God bless our nation.
And Botswana might be next – on Thursday! Here’s the final heat coming up. Ready for donuts? Once again a nation awaits the news: Will we win that first medal? Nijel Amos had the third best time in the semi-finals today and came in second in his heat. Thursday at 3 pm is the finals. The Botswana flag goes to work that day!
I also want to congratulate three nations who won their first fencing medals this Olympics: Venezuela, Norway and Egypt (That was Africa’s first fencing medal!) Remember, there are no pro athletes in fencing! (Nor in curling!)
