This past week our 2 local newspapers detailed Congressman Rob Wittman’s 3 visits to area groups to “meet and discuss their concerns”……..

All 3 of these groups are located in the King William County area. All 3 of these groups are “ soft audiences”, friendly groups inclined to give the Congressman a warm welcome with softball questions.

Is that the criteria Wittman uses when he states we should contact his office to arrange meeting with him to discuss our concerns ? His staff has continued for 6-9 months to stonewall our repeated requests for Wittman to come and speak at one of our meetings. Why is Wittman so reluctant ? What was the National debt when Wittman was first elected ? What is it today ?

Our group is comprised of citizens who live in his district. Our group is comprised of intelligent individuals who have insight into the world of politics and how it works. Our group has tough questions on Wittman’s record and his dodging the topic of spending cuts. Our group wants to ask Wittman what spending cuts he has that would address the national debt that is spiraling out of control.

In a recent visit to another group, Wittman took President Trump to task on the President’s proposal to withhold the proposed 1.9% pay raise for retired Federal employees. Wittman stated that “ we must find inefficiencies elsewhere”. This guy has been in Congress for 11 years and apparently he is still looking for these elusive inefficiencies. This is the same guy who voted NO on cutting subsidies to Amtrak and we all understand why. If Wittman can’t cut this low hanging fruit, he won’t cut anything .

That might explain then why he keeps ducking the King William T.E.A Party and trots around the district pandering to groups he knows won’t ask the tough questions he would have to answer at our meeting.

Taxpayers pay this guy’s salary, and those taxpayers include members and supporters of the King William T.E.A Party. He works for us, perhaps in November voters need to send Wittman packing. He can chose to accept our invitation and convince voters he is worthy of keeping his job . He isn’t likely to do that because he is a typical politician, dole out some money /benefits to select groups that he can then expect to send him back to DC every two years. He has over 11 years learned how to play the game. Rob Wittman is symbolic of what is wrong in Congress and why our national problems worsen while Rob continues his hunt for those elusive inefficiencies .

If you care about holding government accountable pick up your phone, call his office and ask his staff why Wittman continues to duck us. Ask him why he refuses to speak at a King William T.E.A Party meeting. He certainly has found time to speak to plenty of other groups.

I agree with you, Bob, BUT Should we really prefer “Vangie” with it’s free education, medical care, college loan forgiveness, etc.? (Limited options meand limited choices.) Rob, at least, seems to be (very) slowly getting better at representing his constituents in a conservative district. Admittedly we’re trapped with “the lesser of two evils” but the “greater of two evils” is far worse.

I doubt Bob will answer your question as to how to vote if the Tea Party is a 501C3 non-profit. IRS rules, and they could lose their 501C3 status if he takes sides. So, I’ll take your question as I am not a 501C3. By all means vote for Vangie!

Gene seems to exemplify the old rule, don’t open your mouth and confirm peoples suspicions.

Voting for someone who has $200,000 in student loans ? Someone not smart enough to avoid that level of debt ….don’t think so

My point in this exercise is to raise the discussion on competition in politics.

We are in this mess because we have two political parties who are almost identical in how they govern.

As for Wittman becoming more conservative…….. I would equate that with drowning slowly. This guy has supported new spending across the board over his entire 11 years in Congress, and nary a dimes worth of any spending cuts. He panders , sailing around the district advocating for more money for a dozen spending bills , and 11 years is long enough for any elected official.

Let him return to the private sector and earn a living like the rest of us.

” The less of two evils” mentality has gotten conservatives where ? This isn’t a athletic contest, some damn baseball game. We are standing so deep in debt and worsening by the day. It is long overdue to open up politics to real competition. When a contest does not have a Independent or a Libertarian in the race one can always preserve their voting privileges and write in a name

I’m a Democrat considering a run for the Virginia Senate in the 4th District next year. I’d be very happy to engage with the King William or any other Tea Party group. I have in fact attended several Mechanicsville Tea Party meetings, though not as a candidate.

Generally speaking, I understand you think liberty cannot survive a powerful government. But I wonder just what role you think it should have. National defense, of course, and presumably regulation of immigration. Some hierarchical authority must legislate at least minimal regulations to govern capitalism, protect core values such as “thou shall not steal,” and provide courts to adjudicate disputes. Some collective action is necessary to create the infrastructure required for a modern economy to function.

I also wonder whether you think government action can sometimes protect liberty. Lack of access to health care, for example, or connectivity with others in an economy that depends on integration of businesses with consumers and each other, can have the effect of limiting my choices. The corporations that provide these services, after all, care more about profit than anyone’s personal freedom.

Government needs revenue to pay for all this of course. What is the appropriate level? And should those who benefit most from our system pay a bit more? If you don’t think so, then why not?

In any event, government should of course not spend more than it takes in, but It’s obvious that under some circumstances government must borrow money. No budget can allow for every emergency, and every organization sometimes borrows to invest where managers believe that investment will bring returns that exceed interest costs. Government should not go into debt without good reason – and I’m wondering how you would define “good reason.” Does “give wealthy people more money in hopes that they’ll pay if forward” qualify?

Forgive me if I sound like I’m brainstorming – but I’m sort of doing just that. I’m genuinely interested in how I, as a Democrat, might secure your vote. I do have core principles that I won’t compromise to get your support. But I wonder where, if at all, we might find common ground.
