I don’t know if this is just the two precincts where I observed this happening or if it going on everywhere.
Having worked the polls on election day as a Magisterial District Chairman, when elderly voters who were unable to walk or stand drove up, either by themselves or with a driver, both the Lee Davis High School and Mechanicsville Elementary School Precincts require someone to come in and stand in line – which is presently an hour – show the person’s ID to the folks checking people in and then they are given a ballot to take outside.
If the person was able to drive themselves, but unable to stand in a line for an hour, they are out of luck. And even people bringing an elderly person to the polls will be required to leave the person unattended in the vehicle for over an hour to obtain a ballot.
I have called the State Board of Elections and was given the number to the Hanover County Registrar’s office. The person at the SBE agreed that this was not a good situation and promised to follow up with the Hanover Registrar to see what can be done. So far, I have not heard back from a message left for the Hanover Registrar.
This will have the net effect of suppressing the elderly vote in Hanover and shamefully disenfranchising our Seniors.
