Hanover Supervisor Kelly-Wiecek’s “Extravagant Expenses” Revealed in FOIA Request

I Posted a Reader Submitted post concerning a recent trip taken by Hanover Board of Supervisors member Angela Kelly-Wiecek. The post – along with numerous Letters to the Editors of several local publications – have lambasted Kelly-Wiecek with accusations of spending taxpayer money on a recent Florida trip akin to the extravagant vacations taken by one Michelle Obama.

It has been widely reported that Kelly-Wiecek voted against a proposed tax cut in Hanover’s Real Estate Tax rate and then took off on a taxpayer paid trip to Florida.

A comment by a gentleman I have known for several years, Evan Fabricant, was entered on the post on Virginia Right! saying:

Thank you for your indepth reporting about the inter city visit to Tampa. I agree that Hanover County needs to be mindful of how funds are spent for out of state travel. It is my understanding that Angela Kelly’s expenses for the trip were paid partly by the Richmond Regional Planning District Commission where she serves as Chair and the other part of the cost was directly out of her pocket. Hanover County DID NOT pay any part of her trip as you claim.

I wanted to point this out, since Hanover is a fiscally prudent county and in the case of Angela, Hanover did not spend anything for her trip as you state in your blog. Please get the facts on how everyones trip was paid for and reblog with accurate facts.

Thank you,
Evan Fabricant

I know Fabricant to be an honest and trustworthy person, so I requested all of Angela Kelly-Wiecek’s expenses that she has submitted for reimbursement since being elected as a member of the Hanover Board of Supervisors in order to document his assertions.

And for those who were expecting to see extravagant expenditures for lavish frills, I am afraid I have bad news.

Not only are there no reimbursements for 5 Star hotels in Florida, the only items Kelly-Wiecek has turned in for reimbursement is mileage at the usual rate for travel to meetings she is required to attend.

That’s it. She is, in fact, the least reimbursed member of the Board.

Now you may argue that Hanover pays the Richmond Regional Planning District Commission tax dollars, and I believe that is a fact. And the Commission, according to Fabricant, paid part of the expenses and Kelly-Wiecek paid the remainder. So if you want to make a case that Hanover should look at what is paid to the Richmond Regional Planning District Commission from our tax dollars, that would be a legitimate cause.

But the FOIA Documents show Angela Kelly-Wiecek to be very frugal with taxpayer reimbursements.

And I hope this sets the record straight and I thank Hanover County for the quick and thorough response to my FOIA request. The documents were provided quickly and without cost and I believe they have served  the purpose for which the Freedom of Information Act was created. Openness and honesty between the people and the government that serves them.

And thanks to Evan Fabricant for pointing out the misinformation that has been circulating around Hanover and the region and giving me the opportunity to set the record straight.
