Hanover Tomato Festival – 2009

Hanover County held it’s annual Tomato Festival on Saturday. If you live around Hanover County, you need no introduction. For those that Republican AG Nominee Ken Cuccinellidon’t know, there is something about Hanover soil that produces the absolute best tasting tomato. You can plant just about any type of tomato here and compare it to the same type grown elsewhere and the Hanover tomato will win every time. No brag, just fact!

The event is held at Pole Green Park every summer and the turnout is amazing. I have not yet seen the crowd estimates, but it should be 45,000+. I live 4 miles from the park and it took an hour to finally get to a parking place. I left an hour before the 4 PM closing and it took almost an hour to get back home. And cars were still streaming in! The weather was custom made for the festival. Past years have seen rain as well as heat and humidity in the oppressive range. Saturday was perfect. At noon, the temperature was 83F and there was a 10 MPH breeze all day. The high temperature reached 88F, but the breeze made it the perfect day for an outdoor festival.

There are contests. Recipes, cookbooks, food and fun. Kids always tire out long before they run out of things to do. Live music, booths ranging from Church groups to fitness centers to food. Fire and EMS equipment, and every kind of food you could possibly imagine for sale.

I spent a good part of the day in the Hanover GOP Committee booth, handing out lapel stickers, bumper stickers and literature for our three State candidates, Bob McDonnell for Governor, Hanover’s own Bill Bolling for Lt. Governor and Senator Ken Cuccinelli for Attorney General, as well as John Cox, our nominee for the 55th District House seat. Bob McDonnell and Bill Bolling had other commitments, but State Senator Cuccinelli stopped by to talk to people and answer questions from voters. He also listened to the concerns Virginian’s have about jobs and the power grab our President is on.

Retiring Delegate Frank D. Hargrove, Sr and his wife Oriana stopped by the GOP booth and drew quite a crowd for hugs and handshakes.

Chris Peace, Delegate from the 97th House District was busy over at the booth sponsored by the Historic Pole Green Church. I spoke with Chris for a few minutes as he handed out literature and spoke about the treasures Hanover County has in it’s own back yard. Chris’ knowledge and enthusiasm for our county, as well as his hard work as as a delegate are the main reasons he is unopposed for reelection this year. He does a remarkable job representing Hanover.

Chickahominy District Supervisor Bob Setliff helped pass out literature and answer questions at the GOP booth as well. You will often find Bob volunteering at Republican events, and lending his time and efforts to help the party.
John Cox - 55th House District Republican Nominee
I saw many friends and neighbors and people I don’t know yet. By late afternoon when I left the booth, most of the crowd was sporting McDonnell, Bolling, Cuccinelli, Cox and Peace stickers. As my wife and I walked around the other booths, there was not one Creigh Deeds sticker in sight. Believe me, I looked! I am sure he had a few supporters there, but I imagine his position on Cap and Trade, which will devastate jobs in his own district, was so embarrassing, his supporters did not want anyone to know who they were. You would think that a tax so bad that 1500 jobs in his area will be eliminated would be enough to at least take a position on, right? Well, Deeds has no position on Cap and Trade.

Another successful Hanover Tomato Festival at an end, we got in line for the hour long 4 mile trip home.

  1. Good looking post and good to see the GOP doing so well there. I was down at the Waynesboro Extravaganza yesterday and the Waynesboro GOP has a kick-ass booth this year. I have some photos up at: http://rightsideva.blogspot.com/2009/07/waynesbor… and hope to have more later. Like there, I found no Deeds stickers or even a booth for the local Democratic party but I hear they showed up later with limited exposure.

I am sure the tomatos are good but will they compare with tomatos from South Jersey?
I know of people who will drive and even fly them in to get them….
