Yesterday, we discussed about the visionary bills of Del. Sam Rasoul (D-District 11 [Roanoke]) on opening up the political system (and juvenile sentencing reform) and your blogger sent the post by email to the delegate and asked him to consider a ballot access bill…well…
He DID it!
Here is the bill courtesy of the Virginia General Assembly’s website. This is the blurb:
LIS > Bill Tracking > HB82 > 2016 session
Elections; definition of “party” or “political party.” Changes the definition of “party” or “political party” to mean an organization of citizens of the Commonwealth that, at either of the two preceding statewide general elections, received at least five percent of the total vote cast for any statewide office filled in that election.
It is not as radical as what I wanted but it is a reduction of the percentage requirement from ten to five percent in the last two statewide elections for ballot access.
I do support this bill. We’ll advise you of details.
