I’m For (But Obviously NOT the Blog) Canova Peterson for Mechanicsville Supervisor!

Last evening I told a friend of mine who might live in the Mechanicsville Magisterial District to vote W. Canova Peterson for supervisor.  So I decided tonight after speaking with other friends that I would place it on the record:  Canova Peterson for Mechanicsville Supervisor.  It is not a blog endorsement.

Why?

I think Glenn Millican is a fine individual and we need more like him in any community.  I agree with him on proffers and on transparency in government.  But I am concerned:  The Friends of Hanover Schools, which is a group wanting to continue the indiscriminate “investment” in education in accordance with the educrats had endorsed Millican for reappointment to the board. Read this portion of their 2014 endorsement:

We have been impressed by Mr. Millican’s thoughtful questions when faced with difficult budget and policy decisions. It is clear that he is focused on the core tenets of school leadership: teaching and learning. Mr. Millican provides valuable insight into the issues affecting our school division. In 2012, he rightly called for the hiring of additional STEM teachers, responding to the pleas of over 250 citizens and their concerns about budget cuts. He has supported a plan to have retiring teachers work part time, which would allow them to be more effective with a lightened workload. This plan would also save taxpayers money and keep experience in the classroom at a time when experienced teachers are more likely to leave.

Not one word about how many administrators we have or their salaries or car allowances (that would be a “difficult budget and policy decision[s]” for me) or trying to pay for more teachers in the classroom – how to do?  And I know how 250 people can be ginned up to support the school budget every year.  I doubt there are REAL budget cuts in the schools budget.  Salaries are too high for administration outside the school system, too.

Millican has also been on the Hanover School Board from 1990 to 2014.  Of course the school board ought to be elected and not reappointed time and time again.  Ought to be term limits – eight years is long enough for the school board.  Not long term “service” in public office.

I hope Peterson will reconsider the proffers issue.  I would feel better if he had some issue statements on his website.  But the choice is Peterson or Millican and I just have too many questions about Millican’s priorities.  So I encourage those in Mechanicsville to support W. Canova Peterson next Tuesday.

Mr. Peterson needs to reconsider much more than his stance on the proffers. The people in the Mechanicsville District haven\’t been happy. It\’s time for change. Not just in Mechanicsville but on the whole Board of Supervisors. At least the voters in the Mechanicsville District have a choice! Adding Millican to the Board would add some checks-and-balances and send a message to the other members that their out of control high density developments are not appreciated. They reign as kings and queen, not representatives. Growth will happen — we get that. But, be smart about it, dammit! Stop Chesterfielding Hanover!

    Mr. Sanders:

You have lost all credibility with your Hanover County Readers with this blog post.

You have no idea what you are talking about when it comes to matters concerning Hanover County government.

Mr. Peterson is not a Republican and most certainly not a conservative- He is a liberal progressive. He joined the Hanover GOP in order to run for Supervisor as a Republican Candidate.

He’s never worked to elect other conservative candidates- he is a poser.

    • Let me comment to both: Thanks first Mr. Green Jeans and Unhappy in Mechanicsville for coming by – you keep me accountable when I blog and I (usually) appreciate that.

Need evidence Canova is a progressive. I am not and did not express entire happiness with Peterson. But I think you’ll get a real progressive (or are liable to) with Millican. So I decided to support Canova.

Not sure I agree on checks and balances with Millican who has been in government since about 1991 (until 2014)

      Thanks again for your input.

      Mr. Sanders
Both Mr./Mrs. Green Jeans and Unhappy in Mech. are so right in their opinions and comments. You have no Idea how bad Mr. Peterson is for Mechanicsville .

Listen Pal, I have lived here for forty years and know growth is inevitable, as I too have been a developer and buy and sell real estate in Hanover, Chesterfield, and Henrico and have tried to get through to Mr. Peterson
that homes of similar Sq. Ft. In Chesterfield are ten(10) to fifteen(15) percent cheaper-CHEAPER-in Chesterfield for many reasons and TRAFFIC along with schools is the principal reason. The rural nature of Chesterfield has long ago passed those poor people by and they suffer every time they go to the grocery store for example. Do you have to commute daily down Pole Green Rd. or Mechanicsville Trnpk. or get off I 295 at Creighton Rd. every afternoon from work?- you can stop and get a cup of coffee while you wait in the afternoons- and this is just a few examples !
This stilted philosophy that growth brings revenue is only one of the issues I have with Peterson and have had numerous discussions with him in meetings and one on one. It is like talking to the wall, Mr. Peterson we do
not have the infrastructure in place yet for most of these developments ! Do you design buildings for your clients with no foundations ? What problem do you have with supply and demand affecting the value of real estate Mr. Peterson ? If Hanover went back to two houses per acre then we would have way less, and if we maintained our rural environment, then the prices will increase and the developers (whose pocket you are in) can get significantly higher prices-DUH-supply and demand !
Secrecy in Government is another issue we have had with Hanover BOS and believe me if this years elections had not been coming up Mr. Peterson’s stonewalling of live streaming of BOS meetings would still be an issue! He was pushed and dragged into finally getting this done but if you listen to him at one of his Town Hall meetings you would think he personally was responsible.
Secrecy in County Government again rears it’s ugly head when the “elimination of proffers” issue surfaces. Suffice it to say, if you believe it when Peterson says, it was publisized sufficiently then at least you would question one’s judgement when at least five of the study group owned development properties that had significant financial interests. Couple this with the absurd notion that two or possible three of the BOS MEMBERS also had conflicts of interest-Mr. Hazard 500K plus, then you must question your own judgement if you begin to think there is nothing irregular about this ? Why didn’t a couple of our Supervisor’s with the conflict recuse themselves Mr. Peterson ? The reason is they used the stacked review committee’s findings for cover !

Mr. Sanders have you sat down and reviewed the textbooks that Hanover Co. has approved for the next seven years for grades K thru four? A group of us got together and traveled up to the School Board in Ashland for several days to review what had already been approved-so it was an exercise in dumb-and all we were asked to do was evaluate them on a scale of one(1) to ten(10) how well we thought they adhered to the SOL’s.
Trust me, these textbooks are so far removed from what we ( our group ) learned in school-I don’t know about you- it is unconscionable what is being taught ! I will bet you Mr. Peterson has no clue but will tell you he was right on top and trusted his Liberal School Superintendent’s judgement.

Only being involved and monitoring board decisions for the last couple years, I could go on and on with the decisions of this Pro Growth Board on which Mr. Peterson helped lead and keep secretive !
Is this Government by the people and for the people ?

      We need CHANGE !
