I’M not ENDORSING (YET!) ANTHONY WEINER for NYC MAYOR, but WEINER might be BETTER on LIBERTY issues than the INCUMBENT!

There is this article in the Atlantic that suggests that the two leading candidates, former Congressman Anthony Weiner, who resigned in disgrace, and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, who is very frank on her personal struggles and sexuality, might test how much New Yorkers want to know about their leaders.  But I’d rather take this tack on this matter:  Both Weiner and Quinn have manireasons to consider renouncing the nanny-state authoritarianism of incumbent Mayor Bloomberg.

The Mayor, who wants to protect you from yourself, especially in the areas of transfat intake (He says no food for homeless because they cannot determine if it is nutritious!) and soda drink size, and who wants to aggressively pursue climate change, even if it across national lines in an unconstitutional manner, and even styrofoam containers (because they take too long to dissolve in landfills!  An idea supported by Speaker Quinn, by the way.).

But Speaker Quinn did say she was against the sugary soda ban:

City Council Speaker Christine Quinn — a leading candidate to succeed the mayor — has already come out against the ban.

“Seems to me [the plan is] not about knowledge, empowerment or access. It seems to be more on the punitive side of things, and I worry . . . in the end, it won’t have the positive result,” Quinn said yesterday. “People will just get more, smaller sodas or refills.”

The council speaker, typically a Bloomberg ally, said it would be more helpful to educate people to make better decisions about what and how much they eat and drink.

Speaker Quinn said that well.  But perhaps Weiner might be more sensitive to personal liberty, as one who had his private life, as unholy as it seems to me, placed on public display.  Almost anything would be better than the nanny-in-chief Bloomberg.  Seems to me Quinn could have done more to stop the mayor.  Weiner has no such baggage so at this moment, hence he is the best choice that can win.  (I will probably end up, if I endorse at all, coming out for the Conservative candidate, who almost certainly will not win.)  We’ll see if Weiner comes out to get rid of some of these silly authoritarian bans.  If so, he might be a contender after all.

I’m sure he’s also “much better” on all the issues related to FILTH and SCUM as well! I’m just say’in!
