Is Anyone Else Seeing GOP Emails Going to Spam in Gmail?

I noticed this phenomenon the last presidential election (2012). I have several email addresses for various things and I run them through Gmail because the spam filters are very good most of the time. I also have my mail filtered through a spam service before it even reaches my mailbox. I use a service called Spam Hero as sort of a “pre” filter. In the last 90 days, Spam Hero has filtered a total of 49,968 emails and removed 29,876 pieces of spam leaving me to deal with 20,092 “clean” emails. And this is for just 2 of my email domains, this blog and a domain I have had for around 20 years.

So Spam Hero receives an average of 555 emails per day and removes 332 of them leaving about 223 “clean” emails which are sent to Gmail and filtered again, along with a few other domains where I get email and some directly to my Gmail address.

Before filtering, I receive at least 1,000 emails every day. The spam filters cut it down to “only” a few hundred per day.

The Spam Hero filters pretty much never filter out “ham” (as opposed to spam). But some spammers do get through. And Gmail pretty much takes care of those.

But the “false positives” with Gmail seem to get worse during national elections. Especially presidential ones.

So every couple of days I have to go through my Spam folder in Gmail and either mark the “good” emails as “not spam” or if it is important, I create a filter to “never send it to spam”.

When I checked today (I emptied the spam folder yesterday) I had 39 Spam messages in my Gmail spam folder. And when I checked, I noticed right away that there were a number of emails from GOP folks as well as Conservative and grassroots organizations. It turned out that out of the 39 “spam” messages, 13 of them were from Republican or Conservative sources.

People like Mia Love, Ed Rollins, John Bolton, Paul Ryan, Team Trump, Great America PAC, Marco Rubio, FreedomWorks and several others. In all, there were 13 GOP type emails out of 39. That is a 33% false positive rate.

In the past, it has not been enough to simply make the false positives as “not spam” and I have to actually take the time to create a filter. Most of these are fund raising emails and I would just delete them anyway, but the number that are hitting the spam bucket seem to be way up. I know I am getting more than the usual number of these, but they usually do not hit the spam filter.

On the other hand, none of the emails I receive from the Democrats go to spam. Barack and Michelle Obama, Nancy Pelosi, Debby Wassermann-Schultz, Biden, the DNC and more never go to spam. (Yes, I am on the Democrat email lists so I can see what they are doing.)

With FaceBook and Twitter filtering out views from the right, is Google doing the same by spamming GOP emails?

Or are there a lot of people hitting the “spam” button causing the Gmail filters to mistake valid, though annoying, emails for spam?

That would be more believable if my Democrat emails also fell into the spam box.

Who knows. But all my friends on the right need to look behind Gmail and check those spam folders.
