Say it ain’t so!
Speculation abounds and tongues are wagging that Bill Bolling, the current Republican Lt. Governor of Virginia, bitter about Attorney General Cuccinelli’s decision to run for Governor may run as an Independent.
After assuming that the Republican Nomination was all locked up after his magnanimous gesture to seek a second term as Lt. Governor and allow Bob McDonnell, whom most saw as the stronger candidate, uncontested access to the GOP nomination.
After all, a bloody, expensive battle for the nomination would take a lot of wind out of the sails of the winner, not to mention cash out of the war chest, and make the Governor’s Mansion that much harder to achieve for the GOP. And after two straight losses at the polls, the Republicans needed a win.
But a funny thing happened on his way to the GOP Nomination Coronation – Ken Cuccinelli tossed his 10 gallon hat into the ring and Bolling immediately sunk in the polls (51% to 15% in favor of Cuccinelli) and to most who predict these things, we were all betting on the snowball in hell rather than Bill Bolling.
Not that Bolling hasn’t doen a good job as head honcho in the State Senate. And with a 20-20 split between Democrats and Republicans, he has a good chance to make a positive difference, as long as the many RINO’s in the Senate stay in line.
Just after Cuccinelli announced that Bolling had a fight on his hands, the Lt. Governor came out with a bitterly worded statement worthy of the character Gollum in J.R.R. Tolkeins’s Hobbit filled trilogy. “It’s mine, my precious,” Bolling snapped.
But common sense and reality hit Bolling like a ton of bricks and he decided that he would pull out of the race for the ring.
But there is no indication the bitterness and anger has subsided, much to the delight of big taxing and even bigger spending Democrats like Terry McAuliffe, the Carpetbagger would be Virginia Governor (who used government money to build a plant and provide jobs – in Mississippi NOT in Virginia).
McAuliffe would absolutely love for Bill Bolling to mount an Independent bid for Governor, assuring the Democrats another win in Virginia by splitting the vote.
In fact, they met just the other day, Bolling and McAuliffe did, and were mum on their discussions.
But the flames are already building and the last thing Republicans in Virginia need right now is a vote splitting spite campaign by Bill Bolling to “teach Cuccinelli a lesson” at the expense of the entire state.
What we haven’t heard out of Bolling’s mouth just yet is “I am not going to run for Governor, period.”
But we have heard nothing and only see Bolling meeting with the one man who has the most to gain with an Independent effort from Bolling.
Add to that the fact that Bolling is presently reporting a Campaign balance of $1.5 million cash on hand and you have to say, inquiring minds want to know.
Is Bill Bolling a vengeful egomaniac Republican turncoat about to throw his Party and the Commonwealth under the bus for his own personal satisfaction? Because there is absolutely no way Bolling can win as an Independent.
Or are we reading too much into the fact that Bolling had Tea and Crumpets with Terry Mac and some of Bollings biggest donors like McLean Mortgage Corp (who supported Terry Mac in 2009) are pumping 6 figure donations into his campaign?
The rumors and speculation is already out there. The last thing Republicans need right now is betrayal by one of their own.
Virginia Right! will be keeping an eye on the donors list. McAuliffe has money and a lot of friends with money. And an underhanded “spoiler” campaign is exactly the type of thing that the “win at all cost” Democrats will pull to rape and pillage Virginia’s taxpayers like the National Democrats are doing so skillfully these days.
What say you Bill Bolling?
You gonna stab us in the back with an Independent run or are you going to support your Party?
Inquiring minds want to know, they say.
