IS CHAP PETERSEN more of tha TEA PARTY DARLING than GOVERNOR McDONNELL? Only ONE THING for the GOVERNOR to DO!

I get a lot of emails from patriots and tea party leaders and maybe a few wannabes, too.  But I was surprised when I got sent a talking point from a leading tea party patriot with this in it:

Quote Democrat Chap Petersen who voted against the bill:

“a grotesque combination of tax cuts, tax rebates, tax increases, new taxes, old taxes which are phased out (and then reappear elsewhere), regional alliances . . . special projects, and exceptions to all of the above.” He asked his Republican colleagues: “Did you have to rewrite the entire Code book, so you could use the fake ‘but we’re cutting taxes too!’ line on gullible voters?”

Chap cited by a Tea Party leader?  There is a lot of furiousness at both the governor and even at AG Cuccinelli.  This does not bode well for a future run for office.  Now, Senator Chap Petersen is a confirmed liberal.  But he is a leader of integrity and has new ideas.  I admire and respect Chap very much.  But the Tea Party is up for grabs.  No loner can the GOP look at it as – they have no where to go.  They do have places to go:  Libertarian and Constitution Parties are out there.  Not voting is an option, too.  I am still a loyal Republican, but like when John W Davis was asked in the height of the New Deal if he was still a Democrat, he said, “Very still!”  The Tea Party people could embrace even Chap Petersen.  I doubt it.  But I would have said a month ago the Tea Party will embrace Chap Petersen the day the Pope abdicates!

It was fine for the governor to call for new taxes for roads.  I think that is necessary.  But to link Medicaid expansion to the tax bill is disappointing at best.  It is not an issue appropriate for a Republican/conservative governor to take.  There is only one thing for Gov. McDonnell to do (and let’s hope the Governor monitors this blog!); he must VETO both the Medicaid expansion bill to save his integrity with the Dems he made the deal to pass the transportation tax bill, and veto the transportation tax bill, to save face with his own party.  The governor then should call a special session for the transportation tax issue.  Otherwise, I am afraid he’s going to have to enjoy being a lobbyist with McGuireWoods or wherever the governor had planned to go after the governorship until he ran for President.  Because, he can’t win an election at this point.  I hope sincerely I’m wrong.
