There is a remarkable story that I must research further on the IOC suspending the India Olympic Association from the Olympic movement. I do not know what the facts are yet. But here’s an interview with a former Indian Sports Minister [Dr. R. S. Gill] who seems to be close to what is occurring in the Olympics, a result of the use of professional athletes: Sports Imperialism.
Former Sports Minister M S Gill today lambasted the International Olympic Committee for threatening to suspend India and said the country should not be “frightened of paper tigers” who are rejecting electoral reforms in the IOA despite following them in their own case.
Gill, however, rejected the IOC’s stand, saying it smacks of “sports imperialism”.
Apparently the Indian GOVERNMENT forced the IOA to adopt term limits. But the IOC has term limits, too!
Wait, there’s more:
“They (the IOC) do not like to annoy their voters in any manner. I also see that there is clear sports imperialism of the west in all games. The control over each game, is essentially with the western world. Political imperialism has gone but not sports imperialism,” he said.
I agree! Dr. Gill is on the verge of a visionary stand. The use of pro athletes is indeed sports imperialism! It favors unfairly the major powers who can afford pro leagues or athletes. So I say to the Indian sports leaders – stand for what’s right – stand for other nations – stand for respect for ALL nations. No more scores like this! Maybe Dr. Gill will encourage the smaller nations to fight against the unfairness of pro athletes in the Olympic Games.
