There are several types of donations that may be legally made to political campaigns. Of course you can donate cash, but there is a second type of donation – in-kind.
Now the value of volunteer work is exempt, if my non-lawyer reading of the laws is correct. But everything else must be reported. And while most political junkies look into the cash donations, a lot of times the in-kind donations go unnoticed. A friend or supporter who caters an event for free must be reported as an in-kind contribution. And most political campaigns routinely benefit from this type of donation and Democrat Terry McAuliffe is no exception.
But while looking through the in-kind donations for McAuliffe, I noticed three rather significant donations totaling $42,739 from Planned Parenthood – a pretty shocking number for 2013 and his second largest in-kind donation.
These donations, if you click on them, show the donations were for Website Services and Staff Time.
Now, if these were off the clock Planned Parenthood employees, their time would be considered their own and is not reportable as a Planned Parenthood donation. So one can only assume that these are on the clock employees that work for the abortion provider.
Now if Planned Parenthood was a private business that donated the work product of their paid workers, it would be unremarkable in every way.
But Planned Parenthood receives a lot of our tax dollars that, we are told, go to pay for services “other than abortion”. I’m not sure I actually believe that, but taking them at their word, then the tax dollars are paying for other things, like employee salaries.
So I am not sure it is possible for a group like Planned Parenthood to show beyond the shadow of a doubt that money they receive from the taxes we all pay is not being used to subsidize the campaign of Terry McAuliffe.
The State Board of Elections and the FEC needs to look into this and make sure tax dollars are not being diverted to a political campaign.
Again, I am no attorney, but as an ordinary citizen I think we are entitled to know the truth and make sure that Planned Parenthood has properly fire-walled our tax dollars from their political activities – cash or in-kind.
And a second anomaly with the in-kind donations is that there are not, at least so far, any donations listed for housing the organizers the McAuliffe Campaign is bringing in from outside of Virginia. (I say outside of Virginia because one would assume a Virginia Community Organizer would already have a place to stay in the Commonwealth.)
This was at the bottom of an email I received from McAuliffe’s field director:
P.S. We’re also searching for grassroots supporters who are willing to provide housing for our organizers to ensure that every dollar we raise will go towards electing Terry McAuliffe and other Democrats across the state. Let me know if you’re willing to host an organizer now or in the future!
Democratic Party of Virginia
I happen to have a Democratic friend who has offered to house one of the organizers. I happened to mention this to her as a joke – McAuliffe is so desperate he has to look to Conservatives like me to house his “organizers”. It wasn’t intentional, but she signed up and will be hosting one person.
I mentioned this to her for a laugh, but the last laugh may be on her if she actually hosts a McAuliffe organizer (and I WILL KNOW) and her name does not show up on the in-kind donation listing.
I’m watching you, Terry!
