Karyn McDermott – Rest in Peace

It is with a heavy heart that I write my friend Karyn McDermott has passed away. She was taken to the hospital a few days ago in Australia and her internal organs had begun shutting down. There was nothing they could do except make her as comfortable as possible. Apparently the surgeries and efforts to save her life after the horrific accident she suffered a few years ago took a toll. I am sad she is gone but glad she survived the accident and we all had a bit more time with Karyn.

We met in 2009 while we were both covering a political event for a Virginia House of Delegates race. But where else would anyone meet Karyn but a political event of some kind? We chatted a while and it so happens I am fairly good at picking up on accents. And as I listened to Karyn talk, I was completely baffled as to where she came from. I heard some words that made me think Scotland, some English, and then there was the really odd Aussie pronunciations of some words. I finally admitted to her I was at a loss to figure out her origin and I heard Scottish, Aussie and English as well as American English that creeps into a dialect after several years. She said she was born in Scotland, lived in Australia and England and the US. She was impressed that I picked up on all of her former habitats.

Karyn was a brilliant writer and was working on a TEA Party book.  I don’t think she ever finished the book, but I know she was close. The picture here was one I took at her house that she planned to use as the cover photo on the book.

I was so encouraged to see her after her accident at a political event in her wheelchair. She told me they said she would never walk again. And just about the time I was getting used to seeing her in the wheelchair, I saw her walking with a cane. And she vowed to get rid of that as well.

And she did.

Kaz – we are all going to miss you and I am better off for having known you and called you my friend. You had your problems, and they were many, but you were a force of nature, a brilliant writer and a brilliant light that burned out all too soon. I pray you find true peace now and if there is a political publication in Heaven, I know you are the newest journalist on the staff.

Through bleary eyes I say Farewell.
