I like this posting from the Home School Legal Defense Association on the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities:

Please give these senators some or all of the following message:

I urge you to oppose the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. This treaty surrenders U.S. sovereignty to unelected UN bureaucrats and will threaten parental control over children with disabilities. Our nation already has laws to protect disabled Americans. This treaty is unnecessary and will hurt families. If the Senate ratifies this treaty, it would be the first time ever that the U.S. has ratified a treaty that obligates us to recognize economic, social, and cultural entitlements as rights under domestic law. Please take the time to examine this treaty carefully.

I agree.  Call your Senator:  Go to this HSLDA site to make that contact.  We can win but we need to keep up the pressure.  Many otherwise worthy organizations for disabled people are encouraging their people to call to support the treaty.  Here’s two examples of the ignorant things disabled people are being told:

A group that supports home schooling has been successful in raising concerns about the CRPD. However, their concerns appear to be based on a misreading of the treaty. During the Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing on July 12, Senators were assured that the treaty would not impact parental rights. The Arc continues to work with numerous other disability advocacy groups to garner support for ratifying the treaty.

Who has assured ARC that parental rights are not being impacted?  The Obama Administration?  Liberal Senators?  Law professors?  Those are hardly assuring to me.  Read these posts to be sure!  Try this:

Last week’s warm reception in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee was excellent for supporters of the CRPD, but it also provoked a storm of calls from the opposition led by the Homeschool Legal Defense Association and Rick Santorum, spurred on by inaccurate statements. WE NEED YOUR HELP NOW, MORE THAN EVER.

1. The ADA and other disability laws do not have deaf-specific language; the CRPD recognizes sign language and deaf culture as human rights, and includes language such as “deaf culture”, “linguistic identity”, and “deaf community.”

2. The United States is currently excluded from the International Committee formed to enforce the requirements of the CRPD throughout the world. If the CRPD is ratified in the U.S., the U.S. will be able to join the global community in efforts to promote, protect, and ensure full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms by all persons with disabilities, and to promote respect for their inherent dignity.

Who decided that the homeschoolers and/or Rick Santorum are not truthful on this question?  No answer to their concerns given to the deaf people who read this site.  And these reasons to support the treaty are actually reason to NOT support it!  Deaf people are covered as appropriate under the ADA and we do not need new, uninterpreted “human rights” for sign language or deaf people specifically.  Also, we do not need to violate the sovereignty of other nations and meddling in other’s business is not a good tradeoff for answering to foreign agencies.

The disabled community are not being well-served by their advocacy groups.  They need to say NO to loss of liberty and sovereignty.  Say NO to the CRPD.  I’ll gladly debate anyone from the disabled community on this question.
