MAYBE no NHL PLAYERS in 2018? RIGHT RESULT, WRONG REASONS!

Here’s the article from the Wall Street Journal blog site about no NHL players in the next Winter Games:

Fans of Olympic hockey had better enjoy it while it lasts. Next month’s Winter Games could be the last to include the sport’s most-elite players.

I am sorry but this is jump-up-and-down-and-cheer news!  Virtually no sports imperialism in the 2018 Winter Games!  This is exciting news.

For I was once a fan of Olympic hockey.  When we could have a real dream team:  The Miracle on Ice.  But as I have said before, there is no miracle on ice possible anymore.  All for ratings and money and glory.

“Our experience with the Olympics has been a mixed bag—it’s not our tournament, we’re not in control of it, it’s at a time of the year that doesn’t work in our regular-season schedule,” NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said. “On the positive side, we recognize we’re on a world-wide stage.”

The International Olympic Committee couldn’t be reached immediately for comment.

How arrogant can a sports magnate be?  The Olympics should change their schedule for your sport?  There was a time, if Chariots of Fire tells it right, when the UK team refused to even ASK the French to change a heat from Sunday so Eric Liddell could run!

This is almost as arrogant as banning wrestling from the Summer Games.  (No money or glory or sports imperialism there.  Any nation with a few players, a coach, several referees, the wrestling rule book and a mat can aim for gold!  But that’s unacceptable – not enough TV ratings points!)  Thankfully the absurdity of banning one of the original Olympic sports [I think perhaps a guy from Tarsus named Saul might have been at one Olympics but probably not in wrestling but perhaps in track and field and boxing instead: (“Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain. * * * I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air:” [I Corinthians 9:24, 26 (KJV)] So may I run the race, Lord!)] caused the IOC to back off their arrogant decision.

So what could the IOC comment?  Maybe the IOC were in a traffic jam on a Jersey bridge!  The real reason is:  It’s the end of the line for a glory sport, isn’t it?

The WSJ still doesn’t get it:

Since NHL players started playing in the 1998 Nagano Games, the competition has drawn widespread acclaim for its skill level and intensity. Among the teams in Sochi will be six contenders filled with recognizable names: Canada (the defending gold medalist), the Czech Republic, Finland, Russia, Sweden and the U.S. Canada’s team—announced on Tuesday—includes the Pittsburgh Penguins’ Sidney Crosby, the game’s biggest star. Russia and Sweden also announced their rosters on Tuesday, which contain more than three dozen NHL players.

But ice hockey is played in other nations.  Nations that do not have hordes of pro players available to them when the NHL decides its okay to do so.  One example is Brazil (Don’t laugh – here’s the website for the Brazilian men’s team!) and they could try out for the Olympics.  But their 190 million people don’t count to the IOC or the NHL.  No pro players!  My dear readers, think about if you were Brazil – shut out from a realistic chance of competing in the Olympics in a leading sport!  They don’t get a chance to do a miracle on ice on, what did the arrogant NHL spokesperson call it, “a world-wide stage.”

So, it is great to see that maybe the NHL will finally decide to abandon the Olympics.  But it’s for the wrong reasons.  It’s like if the slaveholders decided they’ll abolish slavery because it was not a profitable business plan anymore!  We’ll take the result but more need to stand for the right.  Start by vowing:  NOT ONE DIME for the USOC until they renounce sports imperialism!  Here’s their website.  Support an non-imperialistic sport like curling.  Or give to the Brazilian hockey team instead.
