McDonnell – Deeds Fundraising Analyzed

Most of the blogs and media outlets are reporting that Democratic candidate for Governor Creigh Deeds outraised Republican candidate for Governor Bob McDonnell for the latest reporting period. And while that is technically true, a look at the donations tells a different tale.

Deeds raised $3,375,454.00 from May 28, 2009 through June 30, 2009 and McDonnell raised only $1,819,799.00, an advantage for Deeds of $1,555,655.00 for Deeds.

But if you take a look at the donations, the top donors for Deeds during the reporting period in question were the Democratic National Committee, which chipped in $500,000.00 and the Democratic Governors Association chipped in another $500,000.00. Bob McDonnell received his donations from the Republican National Committee as well as the corresponding Republican Governors Association in the prior reporting period. These groups had to wait for the Democratic Primary winner to emerge, which turned out to be Creigh Deeds.

For the sake of comparing apples to apples, if McDonnell’s Party money were reported in the current reporting period, McDonnell would have reported $5,269,799.00 for the current period, an advantage for McDonnell of $1,894,345.00. It is all in the timing.

More important than the reporting period totals are the total donations overall. This year, Bob McDonnell has reported $7,757,250.00 to his campaign and Creigh Deeds has reported a total of $4,780,694.00, a total advantage for McDonnell of nearly $3 million dollars. And McDonnell holds a nearly $2 million dollar cash on hand advantage.

But the most impressive statistic for year to date cash donations is the number of cash donors to each campaign. Bob McDonnell has received cash donations from 7092 supporters and Creigh Deeds from only 2246 donors, a more than 3 to 1 advantage for McDonnell.

In the end, the grass roots support for Bob McDonnell shows a huge swell of support that is on the rise.

The Deeds campaign is trying to put lipstick on a pig, to use an old familiar term. But his supporters lack enthusiasm, and more importantly Deeds stands for the failed fiscal policies of the Kaine administration, and supports the Socialist policies coming from President Obama.
