Drunk Drivers Being Let Go. Where Is M.A.D.D.???

The important ruling in the Melendez-Diaz case which has been a much discussed topic on this blog and others, as well as other news sources has seen those charged with driving under the influence have their cases dismissed. Governor Kaine has come down in favorMADDLOGO of, well, we are not sure what he is in favor of. He wants to do something administratively. However, the consensus among most is that this is a problem that can only be fixed by the legislature.

In a letter published here yesterday, six prosecutors from around the state lay out a pretty compelling argument for a special session, and the sooner the better.

It was my assumption that Mothers Against Drunk Driving would be bouncing off the walls at the prospect of their hard work in keeping Virginia’s, and the Nation’s roads safe from drunk drivers negated by the Governor’s inaction.

So, I phoned the local offices of Mother’s Against Drunk Driving to see where they were on the subject. I spoke with Chris who identified himself as the Director.

His response was that MADD was going to sit back and look at the situation and not make a “knee jerk” reaction. I had to check my phone and make sure I had not accidentally dialed Governor Kaine or Democratic nominee for Attorney General Steve Shannon. This is exactly the same position as the Governor.

While I can certainly understand the need to be thorough and deliberate, the fact is, the dam is broken and the flood waters have already begun to escape. Drunk drivers and drug cases have been dismissed at an alarming rate. I asked Chris if he had seen the latest letter to Shannon and read the paragraph stating that the Virginia Association of Commonwealth’s Attorneys over 800 members had voted overwhelmingly in favor of calling a special session. He had not seen the letter. I directed him to this blog and asked him to search the blog for information on the Supreme Court decision.

I believe the time for action has come, and there is overwhelming support for a special session to fix the Virginia Statutes.

Organizations like MADD should be leading the charge on this issue as they have so brilliantly to date. Please click on their logo above and urge them to support a special session to keep Virginia roads safe. And please, while you are on their site, look around and offer your support in any way you can. This is a wonderful organization that is directly responsible for saving many lives every year. Perhaps even your own or a loved one’s life. I am in no way trying to belittle the service they do, but rather to put a sense of urgency to the matter at hand.

  1. Bill says:

MADD advocates for "sobriety checkpoints" on roads, "ignition interlocks" for all drivers regardless if they've been convicted of a DUI – BUT suddenly they're ok with letting suspected drunk drivers off scott free? Please… they're just angry as heck that the dems aren't the ones pushing for it.

I think y'all should call MADD and demand they take a stand – I know I am.

I think MADD is an arm of the Democratic party. I have believed that for years. Their reaction is just further proof that they get their marching orders from the DNC.
