MIGHT BUTLER come to RICHMOND? WHAT happens to the HORIZON LEAGUE? BEST for the BULLDOGS in the

No, Butler University is not moving to the River City.  But this report in the Indianapolis Star (and this one in our own Times-Dispatch) indicates that there is serious talks for Butler Bulldogs to replace Temple in the Atlantic 10:

ESPN.com, without identifying sources, reported Monday that Butler has expressed interest in replacing Temple in the Atlantic 10.

An official spokesman for the A-10 said the conference has not been contacted by Butler. Nothing appears imminent. On the other hand, in the ongoing conference realignment, anything is feasible.

The A-10 is clearly a more powerful conference than the Horizon (I an a proud alum of Horizon member Wright State) sending four teams to the NCAAs this year.  Butler would get more national attention (A-10 has a team in Philadelphia, St. Louis, Washington DC, Charlotte and Richmond) and more TV time.  But they lose some exposure in Milwaukee and Chicago, as the Indy Star’s report indicates.  I think Butler will move to the Atlantic-10 since they do not have football.  (Butler has football but it is Division II)

I look forward to seeing Butler every other year here in the River City!  Butler may well move to the basketball based Atlantic-10.

The Horizon League will still prosper but ought to have a new school in the Midwest.  Maybe Evansville or Indiana State or a worthy Division II school moving up to the big leagues!

Finally, Butler is in the CBI tournament and will play Delaware in the first round:

The Bulldogs will host Delaware at Hinkle Fieldhouse on Wednesday, March 14, at 8 p.m. (ET) in the 2012 College Basketball Invitational presented by Zebra Pen.

GO BULLDOGS GO!  Come to Richmond!
