More False Claims From Democrat Tom Shields About Delegate O'Bannon's Record

A mailer packed with false information was sent out this week by Tom Shields, Democratic nominee for the 73rd Virginia House District, and this blog responded with the truth. See the post here.

In light of this inappropriate action, it is clear why Professor Tom Shields was forced to resign from the Sorensen Institute at The University of Virginia University of Virginia. I applaud that decision by UVA.

Today comes an email with more false claims:

O’Bannon voted to allow pharmacists to confiscate prescriptions for contraception (HB 2373, 2009).

It seems Shields is unable to read. The bill actually says the pharmacist may not confiscate the prescription.

Read the Bill, Tom. Are you using Grad Students to write this?

Requires any pharmacist who refuses to fill a prescription for contraception to ensure that the patient seeking such contraception is treated in a nonjudgmental manner and is not subjected to indignity, humiliation, or breeches in confidentiality, and states that the pharmacist shall not confiscate such prescription. O’Bannon voted to allow pharmacists to confiscate prescriptions for contraception (HB 2373, 2009).

O’Bannon voted to prohibit public colleges from distributing emergency contraception pills (HB 1414, 2004).

Wrong again, Tom. This is the Abortion pill. They need to be administered under the close supervision of a physician, not a school nurse. Delegate O’Bannon, being a doctor, saw the dangers and potential deaths and voted on the side of caution for Virginia’s young women.

Again, Tom. Read the bill:

Morning-after pill; public institutions of higher education prohibited from making such available. Prohibits any public institution of higher education in the Commonwealth from making available the morning-after pill in its delivery of health care services to students.

O’Bannon voted to deny rape victims access to emergency contraception in the emergency room (HB 563, 2002).

Tom Shields needs to check this stuff before he sends it out. This bill simply allows a physician that objects to abortion to opt out of participating and prevents repercussions for someone’s religious beliefs.

Again, Tom. Read the bill:

In addition, any person who shall state in writing an objection to any abortion or all abortions on personal, ethical, moral or religious grounds shall not be required to participate in procedures which will result in such abortion, and the refusal of such person, hospital or other medical facility to participate therein shall not form the basis of any claim for damages on account of such refusal or for any disciplinary or recriminatory action against such person, nor shall any such person be denied employment because of such objection or refusal.

O’Bannon voted against improving “the quality of child day care programs” in the Commonwealth (HJ 259, 2001).

This was a bill to study retention of Day Care workers. Nothing to do with the “quality of day care programs”.

Again, Tom. Read the resolution:

Directs the Commission on Early Childhood and Day Care Programs to study the training and retention of child care workers.

O’Bannon neglected to vote on a resolution supporting “equal pay for equal work” (HJ 800, 2001).

He did not vote on this resolution. How does this constitute neglect? Perhaps the Doctor was ill that day. Did you pick up the phone and ask him? Has Tom Shields never missed a day of work? This resolution had absolutely no effect on anything. Just “feel good” resolution.

Recognizes the significance of Equal Pay Day to demonstrate the disparity between wages paid to men and women and supports efforts to eliminate wage discrimination.

These lies and distortions really make me question the character of Tom Shields. Perhaps I gave him too much credit in my earlier posts for actually having integrity. This week he has really sullied his reputation.

I hope these false accusations don’t start to make his students question his ability to teach. I sure do question that at this point.

  1. Jim says:

Tom Shields is an outright disgrace! He does not understand the notion of honor, and certainly has never been exposed to the concept of honesty. Given the number of lies that are readily apparent, he cannot be trusted to represent anybody or anything in a public role. He is the typical lying democrat who has only his own self interest in mind – and also the interest of the DNC – Tim Kaines employer. Why does anyone give him the time of day, much less listen to him? His dismissal from the University says it all – he cannot be trusted!!
