I just received a You Tube video from patriot Tom Gion in Volusia County, Florida.  Volusia County is close to me – I lived in New Smyrna Beach as a preteen and again upon graduation from law school in 1983.

Tom went to the County Council meeting in De Land, Florida on February 3, 2011 and educated his leaders on the dangers of ICLEI.  Here it is:

One thing I would always do and I assume it was done here is have a handout for the council members to read later.  Never be shrill; ICLEI is bad enough without any hyperbole!  Gion also referred to the action of the Carroll County Commission in MD.  Make sure your handout has a way for the council member to contact Rothschild for example.  One local elected official is more likely to review, consider and even contact another one on an issue they are not familiar with.  Local officials have state and national conferences they go to – see about a booth at the conference.  Get your best most articulate people who would be someone a busy local official would want to meet. Not all local officials are aware of ICLEI.  Always, ALWAYS talk up the budget effects of ICLEI.  “Well, the dues are so-and-so and we have a Sustainability Director and he/she makes this much and the sustainability committee has a budget of such and such.”  It does not take long to talk about real money.  Try to find other fora to speak out – local clubs may be eager to have a well-spoken person come to their meeting; start a civic organization of your own:  Volusia County Residents for a REAL Green Community perhaps!

What if my town or city or county is NOT a member of ICLEI?  You are blessed!  Go thank your local officials at a public meeting.  They seldom get thanked at a meeting!  Don’t forget the handout.

Ton Gion, hero for the week!  Continue to speak out in your local community and you may be featured here at Virginia Right!
