My Interview with LP NC House Candidate Erik Raudsep

Tell me about you:

Erik and I had a great discussion.  He’s a first generation American – born here but he’s from – you guessed it – Estonia!  (I like him already!)  Erik is 39 years old and is single.  He owns a home inspection business.  He lives in Durham, NC.

How did you become a libertarian and join the LP:

Erik started out as a Reagan Republican and worked for a GOP Congressman named Rick Lazio.  He actually was a guest with Jack Kemp for the seventh game of the World Series and went to Yankee Stadium!  (I am tempted to envy on so many levels!)  So he was a staunch Republican.  Raudsep was a NY GOP member and their positions were more socially liberal than the national party so he ended up going first to Dem briefly and then ended up being a member of the Libertarian Party of NY.

Erik’s interest in the LP really grew when he moved to North Carolina.  The NC LP is very well organized and Erik decided to get more involved.

Why did you decide to run for the NC House:

Erik felt that and was hearing from potential constituents that the two major parties are not representing the people and so he decided to stand as a candidate for the legislature as a Libertarian.

Your opponent:  Tell me more

The incumbent retired and Zach Hawkins is the Democrat candidate; it is an open race and there is a few days left to determine if there will be a contested election for the Democratic nomination.

Issues to discuss

There is a regulation that if you want to sell commercial pickles you have to take a class and pay a $400 permit fee!  Erik wants to get rid of that and similar regulations on small businesses especially.

He wants to exempt new small businesses for five years from state income taxes.  (Excellent idea!  Del. Glenn Davis call your office!)  Small businesses tend to actually pay a better hourly wage than the large crony capitalist concern that politicians support.

He also is a champion of crime victim’s rights and wants to make it a state constitutional amendment – it is called Marcy’s Law.

Education reform:  NC public schools are being turned into something like a SAT prep – teaching to the test – the standardized tests in NC.  There is $4400 price per student spent in Estonia but NC spends $6800 per student – the state is 42nd is the national ranking for schools.  Other nations like Austria and New Zealand spend similar amounts on students.  Estonia also allows some study and classtime at home so they pay less on transportation.  This can partner in NC with homeschoolers.  Those other nations have excellent educational scores.

Erik’s campaign slogan is:  The Common Citizen with Common Sense!

Erik supports freedom to carry and freedom to marry!

If you look at drug policy the primary use of the criminal law to punish drug use or possession and the jailing of drug offenders will make it more likely those offenders will turn violent.

Any plans or strategy you want to share out loud (e.g. debates)

Raudsep has raised nearly ten grand (yes that is $10,000!) for his campaign.  (Wow!  I am really jealous now!)  Any candidate has got to ask for money!

Have been knocking on doors for a year!  (The Durham/Orange County LP actually bought the neighborhood – a struggling neighborhood economically – a basketball court)

Now there are no debates yet.
