Open Post To: Left Of The Hill Blog

I received an email from a friend / reader today saying that he had posted a comment that disagreed with a post on Left Of The Hill blog. He assured me there was no profanity, although I have no way of knowing that for sure. I find it hard to believe that comments would be deleted by a blogger simply because they do not agree with them. I understand limiting threats or profanity, but the free exchange of ideas? If that is the intent, why not simply turn off comments altogether.

On the front page of Left of the Hill, Bryan has posted:

Left of the Hill is a forum for open political discussion that focuses on the important issues of the day. I strongly believe a politically informed and active public is one of the best ways to ensure that our community’s values are properly represented by our elected officials. I therefore encourage people from all across the political spectrum to participate in the discussion here, as long as it’s done in a respectable manner.

I really wondered what was going on, and thought it was possible the posts were awaiting moderation or something. I emailed my friend back and said as much. To give his comments a chance.

And I posted the following on Left of the Hill:

Hi, Bryan. I am a fellow blogger and just received an email from a friend that said he posted a comment to this post, and it was deleted. He also said he posted your “open political discussion” blurb to the right, and that was also deleted.

Are dissenting views allowed here?

I told him you probably have moderation turned on and he should give it a while. My blog sometimes does things I don’t intend to happen with comments, but I have never deleted a comment (other than Viagra spam and such – but capchas do a good job at killing them).

And I left my name and blog.

My comments appeared immediately, and were up at least a couple of hours. But I now go back and check and see it has been deleted. Not sure what rule Bryan thinks I violated, but I would submit that he has violated his own rules by deleting a perfectly benign comment asking for an explanation.

This is intellectually dishonest and lowers his blog to a sub-par level.

If Bryan can’t deal with opposing views, he needs to at least change his “open dialog” to reflect the fact that his blog is actually a closed dialog blog, where opposing views are not welcome. Or disable comments altogether.

Apparently, a free exchange of ideas and information is not on his mind. In my humble opinion, blogs like this are not worth reading. And there are quite a few of them, which I will not name.

One of the things that I find most appealing with blogs is the fact that I can make comments, challenge the writer, and hopefully learn something.

I have a number of people that regularly challenge me on my views, and a number that agree with me. And others that bring up points I had not thought of, or considered. Some of my more liberal friends have taught me more than any other source, and they are all welcome.

And if I ever get to the point that I refuse to listen to views different from my own I will know it will be time to lay down my keyboard and close my blog.

Bryan, if you want people to listen to you, you have to listen to them. You don’t have to agree, but the value of a blog like yours is pretty low.

And I say this not to disrespect you, ridicule you, or call you out, but to challenge you to grow as a person, but mostly as a blogger.
