It is well established that republican Presidential candidates perform very poorly with African Americans. It is worth noting ( or reminding folks) what happened after Cuccinelli spoke to the NAACP convention in Hampton. If you recall the democrat running for Attorney General decided to skip out on the invite and in November Cuccinelli, obviously the most conservative of the 3 heading the state-wide ticket ,received more votes from this group than McDonnell or Bolling.

Perhaps it was the perceived snub by the democratic nominee……….or a reflection that votes can indeed be mined among those open minded voters in this or any group if a candidate is sincere ( as Cuccinelli was) and asks for their support, as did Trump the other night.

No rational person with open eyes can look at the urban areas across America, cities governed by Democrats for 50 years in many instances and not see how blatant the failures of democratic policies have been, the terrible damage they have done economically and culturally. The notion & view among many republican candidates that it isn’t worth the effort to actively seek support in the African American community is not just a foolish decision but a major mistake. I have often observed that if a conservative speaks honestly about the issues, making a strong case for the power and success of free market policies, school choice, and lower taxes—- votes can be had.

Any candidate would only need cite the actual statistics from the Reagan era, how much upward mobility Reagans policies provided, how much employment and the black middle class grew in this specific group of American citizens, hard to ignore the facts.

Couple all of this with one other distinct element specific to Trump. He is a celebrity with a very broad fan base of those who followed his hit TV show, the Apprentice. That show undoubtedly cast Trump in a light among viewers of all races as a fair guy who gave everyone the same chance to either make his team or be ” fired” . That said his appeal the other night in his speech that he will treat all citizens with equality has to be getting the attention of those that already view him favorably.

If a republican candidate were to increase and peel off 5-6 points , above and beyond the conventional 4-7% typically received from this specific group the contest would be certainly decided in Trumps favor. It is worth the effort if Trump does exactly that, and wades in actively seeking their support.
