Republican Senator Mitch McConnell Offers to Cave First

Most bets were on Speaker Boehner being the first to capitulate to President Obama on the debt ceiling. But it turns out Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell put out an “in case we fail” deal, signaling a huge weakness in McConnell’s resolve.

McConnell essentially wants to give Obama a blank check to raise the debt ceiling at will for the rest of his first term as a “fallback position”.

That is sort of like negotiating to buy a new car and telling the dealer up front that if you can’t agree on a price, you are prepared to pay full price. That dealer will no longer worry about giving you a good deal and will stick it to you.

McConnell is wrong on this one.

Fallback, cave, capitulate it is all the same.

It looked like Obama’s threat to kill old people by withholding their Social Security checks scared McConnell enough he cried Uncle.

Obama has yet to offer a specific plan and the Democrats are 800 days past due on a budget, yet the Senate Minority Leader fears a shutdown.

A new Zogby poll shows that 90% of Americans want the president and congress to reduce the debt.

Fortunately, most Conservatives have tole McConnell to stick his proposal to cave.
