I wanted to write on UKIP and/or the stirring speech I heard tonight from Bishop E. W. Jackson. But I must contend for the faith that was once given to the saints! It appears the massive NSA surveillance program, via a so-called court order as to Verizon, which appears to have spread to Internet traffic, too.
Based on a provision of the USA Patriot Act, a law which no true patriot ought to support, the NSA/Verizon surveillance is comprehensive (although it is not clear if the calls were monitored or just numbers and patterns) and utterly inconsistent with our Constitutional values. See this quote from the Guardian (UK) article court order and compare it with the search and seizure provision of the Virginia Constitution (written by George Mason in 1776 – 15 years before the Bill of Rights were ratified):
The order, a copy of which has been obtained by the Guardian, requires Verizon on an “ongoing, daily basis” to give the NSA information on all telephone calls in its systems, both within the US and between the US and other countries.
The document shows for the first time that under the Obama administration the communication records of millions of US citizens are being collected indiscriminately and in bulk – regardless of whether they are suspected of any wrongdoing.
Section 10. General warrants of search or seizure prohibited.
That general warrants, whereby an officer or messenger may be commanded to search suspected places without evidence of a fact committed, or to seize any person or persons not named, or whose offense is not particularly described and supported by evidence, are grievous and oppressive, and ought not to be granted.
We are reaping the whirlwind caused by the 2012 election. The American people cannot say they were not warned or had a real choice. Ron Paul was on the ballot in every state. But people were scared away for various reasons from voting for him: He’s a kook, a racist, crazy, his ideas won’t work, he hates Israel, won’t go to war with Iran, weak on defense, etc. Aren’t you sorry now!
No, to paraphrase William Lloyd Garrison, Ron Paul told us the time of day and it is high noon! Now let’s repeal the offending passages of the so-called USA Patriot Act (most of the Act deal with financial issues and we need to study that in more detail to determine what to do with those laws) and get rid of this scheme of tyranny!
While we’re at it, let’s all find a way to support the right candidate to defeat Senator Lindsey Graham in South Carolina in the next election. Here’s his defense of the NSA scheme:
Some Republicans also defended the program. Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said on Thursday morning he’s “glad” the NSA is secretly collecting millions of telephone records.
“We are very much under threat,” Graham said on “Fox & Friends,” adding that he is a customer of Verizon, the communications company ordered to turn over the records to the government. “Radical Islam is on the rise throughout the region. Homegrown terrorism is one of my biggest concerns. It is happening in our own backyard, and I am glad that NSA is trying to find out what terrorists are up to overseas and inside the country.”
I would vote for a progressive Democrat over Graham. We must step back from the abyss and restore the Republic.
