SEEMS SHORT-SIDED TO ME FOR OTHERS TO BOYCOTT CPAC DUE TO GOProud

I know many groups and individuals I otherwise respect are skipping this year’s version of CPAC due to one of the participating oirganizations being a gay Republican group, GOProud.  I do not adhere to the agenda of the gay activists.  But it’s got to be true that a gay Republican is closer to my positions on other issues than a gay Democrat.

GOProud claims to support a fair federal tax system, including joint filing for domestic partners.  I would agree with any federal rights for domestic partners PROVIDED that the legislature in the state or the people of that state voted for it, not imposed by  judges.

Here’s other selections from GOProud’s website:

2 – HEALTHCARE REFORM – Free market healthcare reform. Allow for the purchase of insurance across state lines – expanding access to domestic partner benefits; emphasizing individual ownership of healthcare insurance – such a shift would prevent discriminatory practices by an employer or the government.  (Sandy agrees)

***

4 – RESPECTING THE PROPER ROLE OF THE JUDICIARY – We believe our Constitution should be respected and that judges appointed to the federal bench should recognize the proper and appropriate role of the judiciary as laid out by our Founding Fathers.  (Sandy agrees)

5 – HOLDING THE LINE ON SPENDING – Standing up for all tax payers against wasteful and unneccessary spending to protect future generations from the mounting federal debt.  (Sandy agrees again!)

***

8 – ENCOURAGING COMMUNITY ENTREPRENEURSHIP – Package of free market reforms to encourage and support small businesses and entrepreneurship.  Such reforms would create jobs for all Americans – including gay Americans. (More agreement!)

9 – REVITALIZING OUR COMMUNITIES – A package of urban related reforms; expanding historic tax preservation credits; support for school choice.  (YES!  Now come out against ICLEI!)

10 – DEFENDING OUR COMMUNITY – Protecting 2nd amendment rights.  (RAH!)

Much of that I can agree with – as would any Tea Partier.  Besides, gay Republicans have many of the same heroes I do:  Goldwater, Reagan and Ron Paul.

We should seek coalitions with others that have many of the same views lest we create a situation where the only gays in politics are liberal statist Democrats.  There is also the issue of the church; the church must have the freedom without government intervention to express traditional Biblical values.  GOProud may be more willing to dialogue on this.

There is a disturbing report about friction between the ACU and GOProud that would not not appropriate behavior for a guest of an event.  But I am willing to overlook that if that was an isolated incident.  But I will not walk around a gay person because they are gay.  I would if I were at CPAC go see them and ask several good questions:

What is your position on the interplay between gay rights and the church?

Would you think the Jonathan Turley position that government should get out of calling a civil union “marriage” and let the church do that be a domestic position of GOProud?

Could gays vote for a Republican who opposed gay marriage but supported other rights for gays such as ending DADT?

Are you open to political alliances with non-gay groups on issues like spending or pro-business regulations?

How do you feel about anti-sovereignty organizations and treaties like ICLEI and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child?  if you support any of those UN initiatives, which ones are they?  (BTW, I’d talk with the leaders of GOProud if they want to know more about ICLEI – contact this blog!)

Can your organization avoid the “hateful” rhetoric of the left while agreeing that some fringe groups are indeed hateful?

Any thoughts on your organization having a special event or encouraging a candidate like Ron Paul?

So I say to my CPAC readers, go talk to the GOProud folks!  Make them welcome as fellow Republicans.
