McConnell: If GOP Is Majority In 2013, ‘I Commit To The American People That The Repeal Of Obamacare Will Be Job One’

Appearing on Fox News Sunday this week, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell reiterated his pledge that if Republicans are in the majority next year, job one will be full repeal of Obamacare.

As Reuters put it yesterday, “Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said Republicans will insist that the Democrats who control the chamber hold a vote before the election on repealing the law. ‘If I’m the leader of the majority next year, I commit to the American people that the repeal of “Obamacare” will be job one,’ he said on ‘Fox News Sunday.’ . . . ‘This is the single worst piece of legislation that’s been passed, certainly in modern times. And it will be an issue, a big issue, in the fall election,’ McConnell said. ‘We’ve got one last chance here to defeat Obamacare. We can do that in the November election,’ added McConnell.”

Meanwhile, Democrats continue to tie themselves in knots trying to claim that the individual mandate is not the tax the Supreme Court has revealed it to be. Politico notes, “House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi conceded in an interview aired Sunday that a key penalty in the health care law is assessed under the Tax Code — nearly calling the fee a tax, too, before stopping mid-word. ‘It’s a penalty that comes under the Tax Code,’ Pelosi said on NBC’s ‘Meet The Press’ as host David Gregory pressed her to say whether she agreed with the Supreme Court, which deemed the law constitutional because the fee used to enforce the individual mandate amounts to a tax, or with President Barack Obama, who has maintained the fee is not a tax. ‘It’s a ta—; it’s a penalty for free riders,’ Pelosi said, nearly uttering the dreaded T-word before cutting herself off.”

And Fox’s Chris Wallace repeatedly grilled President Obama’s Chief of Staff, Jack Lew, on how the administration can continue to claim the mandate doesn’t amount to a tax. Wallace said to Lew, “Mr. Lew, [the Supreme Court] called it a tax. . . . The middle class is taking quite a hit by what the Supreme Court said is a tax. . . . [T]he nonpartisan CBO says 4 million Americans will be paying that tax by 2016. And let’s look at why Chief Justice Roberts called it a tax. It will be collected and enforced by the Internal Revenue Service.” Lew responded by saying, “[I]f you can afford insurance and you choose not to buy it . . . you will pay a penalty so that you will pay your fair share.” But Wallace pointed out, that when he argued the case before the Supreme Court, Solicitor General Donald Verilli said, “Not only is it fair to read this as an exercise of the tax power but this court has an obligation to construe it as an exercise of the tax power . . . .” Wallace summarized, “Mr. Lew, if it walks, looks and quacks like a duck, it’s a duck.”

As Leader McConnell said last week, “[T]he Court has now spoken. It is a tax. It falls primarily on middle-class families. And this is just one more reason why this law needs to be repealed in its entirety. With every passing day we learn something new about this terrible law. Not only does it make the problems in our health care system worse, but it leads to a tax on middle class families who are either unable or unwilling to purchase health insurance. So it’s time for Democrats to stop trying to defend the indefensible and join Republicans in wiping this colossal legislative mistake clear off the books. Yesterday’s decision gives us the clearest proof yet that this bill has to go.”
