I have blogged that Botswana ought to have a national curling team. Set up some Olympic-quality curling ice in Gaborone (say about 8 sheets or so) and then do try outs. But nobody can curl in Botswana, Sandy? It would take 50 years to have a competitive team. I disagree.
If you get a name coach say Kevin Martin from Canada (He’s done it all, I’d say to him if I were the recruiter for the Botswana team but admittedly I do not know Martin, now he can bring curling to an entire continent!) or Pete Fenson, the skip of the bronze medalist 2006 USA curling team and if you get several committed trainers the national curling team can be competitive in a hurry. They could be ready for 2022:
Here’s the story on the bid for the Winter Olympics in 2022. The Olympics have never been anywhere near Africa. South Africa and Botswana could co-host a Winter Games (here is a ski and snowboarding site in RSA!) and thus as the host country, they could enter a curling team – Botswana gets the curling and maybe figure skating and hockey, too. RSA has hosted a soccer World Cup in 2010.
Botswana, one of Africa’s most stable countries, is the continent’s longest continuous multi-party democracy. It is relatively free of corruption and has a good human rights record.
The BBC is right. Your diamond like came from Botswana:
It is also the world’s largest producer of diamonds and the trade has transformed it into a middle-income nation.
Would be great for the Olympics to come to Africa and Botswana and RSA (and maybe Lesotho and Swaziland) could host the Winter Olympics in 2022. I’ll try for press creds for that event!
