Socialism suffers rejection in European Elections

Election results in Europe are in and the big winners are the Conservatives and the big losers are the Socialists. In what has to be a sobering shock to the Democrats and President Obama in particular, Europeans rejected the spending spree solution to the worlds economic crisis.

Ultra Right wing groups made significant gains, as did Anti-Islam and anti-immigrant groups. The British National Party in Britain, which allows only white’s as members, captured a seat in the EU Parliament.

“Tonight is a very difficult evening for Socialists in many nations in Europe,” Martin Schulz, the leader of the Socialists in the European Parliament, told party faithful in Brussels via video link from Berlin. “(We will) continue to fight for social democracy in Europe.”

Graham Watson, leader of the EU’s center-right Liberal Democrat grouping, said early results suggested a rejection of the Socialist approach.

“People don’t want a return to socialism and that’s why the majority here will be a center-right majority,” he said.

In France, President Nicolas Sarkozy’s conservative party soundly defeated the Socialists, receiving almost 28% of the vote to the Socialists’ 16.48%.

In Germany, Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservatives won 37.8% of the vote. The Social Democrats suffered a heavy defeat winning only 20.8% of the vote, their worst showing since World War II. The result was enough to boost Ms. Merkel’s hopes of ending the left-right “grand coalition” that has led Germany since 2005.

In England, Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s political future is in doubt as his Labour Party managed only 15% of the votes, a dismal third place finish behind the U.K. Independence Party, which wants the U.K. to leave the European Union, with 17% and the Conservative Party with the best showing at 29%.

While President Obama pushes to move the U.S. towards European Socialism, Europe rejected the failed ideas of Socialism and has embraced Conservatism as the best option to solve the economic problems facing the world today.

One can only speculate, but President Obama is moving with such furious speed towards the ideals that Europe now rejects, that he will miss the signs that his days are numbered. U.S. voters are bound to take notice of this major rejection and turning of the tide in Europe. The momentum shift bodes well for Republicans in Virginia, Delaware and New Jersey in 2009 and Nationally in 2010.
