Here’s an interesting news item from across the pond: Education Secretary Michael Gove (who I have had disagreements with before) is trying to distribute a copy of the King James Bible with a person message from him. The 400th Anniversary of the KJV was 2011. Here’s Secretary Gove’s comments according to the Guardian:
In a speech in December, Cameron celebrated the importance of the King James Bible giving three reasons for its relevance.
He said: “The King James Bible has bequeathed a body of language that permeates every aspect of our culture and heritage. Second, just as our language and culture is steeped in the Bible, so too is our politics. Third, we are a Christian country. And we should not be afraid to say so. Let me be clear: I am not in any way saying that to have another faith – or no faith – is somehow wrong.”
Can you imagine what would happen if say, Mitt Romney said something like this? He’d win South Carolina overwhelmingly! But the chattering class would be all over him for that. But Secretary Gove needs help – a private sponsor to distribute the Bibles:
Sources said David Cameron told Gove that while he supported the idea, the education secretary should avoid using taxpayers’ money for it. But Gove has yet to find a private philanthropic sponsor for the enterprise, and some Whitehall sources said he has been told he cannot distribute the book until he does so, leaving thousands of copies in a warehouse abroad.
I hope a ministry in the US will take up the cause. Let’s get the Bible in every British school! (It’s been kicked out of ours since 1962 and we are the worse for it in my view.) I happen to use the KJV because there’s no copyright on it! The Scriptures teach how to have eternal life and how to have an abundant life here on earth. The abundant life is not necessarily one filled with things but life with God is abundant – filled with encouragement, peace and contentment. I’d glad on the blog to confess Jesus as Lord and Saviour! (For more on how to know Jesus as Lord and Saviour – go here!)
