RICHMOND (September 23, 2010) – Statement of Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli on the execution of Teresa Lewis:
“Tonight, the death sentence of Teresa Lewis was carried out by the Commonwealth of Virginia for the murders-for-hire which Lewis committed against Julian Lewis and C.J. Lewis in Pittsylvania County. After Lewis failed in her first attempt to have her husband Julian murdered, she let the two killers whom she had hired into the home she shared with her husband early in the morning of October 30, 2002. Julian’s son, C.J., was home for the weekend from his duty as an Army Reservist. Lewis stood by as the killers shot Julian and C.J. multiple times with 12-guage shotguns, killing C.J. instantly and leaving Julian to die a slow, horrific death. These were brutal, pitiless crimes committed for no other reason than greed.
“The trial judge’s determination to sentence Lewis to death has been exhaustively reviewed and upheld multiple times by the trial court and Virginia Supreme Court. It has been reviewed and upheld by the U.S. District Court and U.S. Court of Appeals, and the U.S. Supreme Court has declined to review it twice. The governor has declined to intervene. The just sentence of death has now been carried out. Our thoughts and prayers remain with the family and friends of Julian and C.J. Lewis.”
